Co budeš dělat

We are going to visit the Rijksmuseum and seeing the best 30-40 culinary paintings (depending on what is available) within 90 minutes.
I tell you everything you want about these paintings and Dutch cuisine, as I am an official ambassador of Dutch cuisine.
Afterwards we walk to the traditional Cafe Welling and enjoy there the Amsterdam ox sausage, artisanal Gouda cheese and mustard and pickles, the so-called Amsterdam Table Sour with the Amsterdam yellow cucumbers and onions. It is said that Van Gogh got his inspiration for his Yellow Sun Flowers when he ate the bright yellow Amsterdam cucumber. We end with traditional eau de vie distillery made by Lubberhuizen, the owner of the brown cafe. One of these is made of cherry plums, also included in the Ark of Taste. On a painting of Van Ruysdael one can see a boat with 2 white-headed cows. These Blaarkop (Blisterhead) cattle (also included in the Ark of Taste) was once the motor behind the Dutch Golden Age. First they made the buttermilk with which sheets were bleached on the meadows, later on from them the milk butter and Leyden artisanal cheese with cumin was produced because it could be held longer on the VOC (Dutch East India Company) ships to the far east. When this cattle became old they were fed with the left over of the Schiedam gin (jenever) industry and masted.

I am member of the Dutch Ark of Taste commission; we try to promote traditional and artisanal Dutch products and recipes.
I am the only guide in the Netherlands who combines visiting the Rijksmuseum and seeing the best Dutch culinary paintings and afterwards enjoying several Ark of Taste products, i.e. the best Dutch cheese and sausage with Dutch pickles and mustard in a traditional Dutch brown pub.

Kde budeš

We meet downstairs in the Atrium of the Rijksmuseum (in the inside central hall near the garderobe) and I will show you the Main Gallery and the Golden Age Gallery with paintings of Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Dijck, Maes, Coorte, Heda and Van Ruysdael.
Afterwards we visit the brown cafe which is one of the last traditional Amsterdam brown cafes with its own clientele.

Rene has created a special culinary Slow Food tour along the beautiful food-themed paintings in the RIJKS museum, complemented with quite an interesting cheese/eau de vie tasting in charming Amsterdam Classic: ‘brown cafe’ Welling. Highly recommended! Treat yourself to this taste of old and new Dutch Masters!

I find the angle of interest very special: the development in food, food culture and table manners of both ordinary people and bourgeoisie on Dutch paintings in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. René Zanderink talks about it with sound of knowledge in short and attractive narratives, illustrated by a good number of paintings of famous Dutch masters.

A perfect tour for gastronomes! I have been to the Rijksmuseum many times before before, but experiencing it through the lens of food history made it a truly unique experience. Rene is a fountain of knowledge on Dutch cuisine, relating its manifestation in art to other cultural-historical topics. Very interesting! The finale of the tour is spent in an authentic Amsterdam brown café, away from tourist traps, savouring traditional snacks and spirits. Excellent way to spend an afternoon.
