We’ll start by enjoying a freshly prepared batch of coldbrew matcha. Next we’ll sample some of Japan's rarest hyperpremium (hot) matcha blends, using our in-house-designed matcha ceramics.

Throughout the tasting, you’ll learn:
* how matcha is grown, harvested, and processed
* how to tell good matcha from mediocre (or worse) matcha, and how to store it
* all about matcha's many health benefits
* the story of matcha and how it became today's social media darling

After the tasting, you’ll practice making the perfect serving of matcha, the way you like it, using the tried and true Breakaway method.

We'll meet in our tasting room at Breakaway Matcha HQ, in San Anselmo (Marin County). The workshop is limited to five people so that everyone gets a hands-on experience.

OMG it was SO FUN today!!!! We talked about how matcha came into being, how it is grown and farmed, the difference between matchas that you can find on the market, tea ceremonies, an esoteric discussion about whether you can lift the centuries-old tea ceremony out of Japan and bring it to Japan-town in San Francisco, which lead to why Breakaway has modernized it, how to make matcha, how it is made by the farmers in Japan, whether it has radiation in it, and so much more. And we had matcha and matcha and matcha. We started with the Coldbrew Original (for which I found a better way to make it than I was), Blend 94 (which I had liked in my flights tasting), Blend 97, which I still didn't like as much as my 98, Hikari (which is $169 for 30 grams so yummy!), and Eric's favorite, the Rikyu blend (a mere $129 for 30 grams), which we got to drink in the ceramic mug of our choice. (That was extra because we were having so much fun.) Of course, I loved the Hikari the best, but the Rikyu, made by the same farmers was also out of this world. Turns out I am making mine the way the farmers do in Japan - very low temp (they go down to 135 and I have been making mine around 145) and a little more matcha than normal (I do two grams instead of one). We were regaled with stories of people who drink ten grams at once! A meal where each person drank 30 grams each and then came home and had some for dessert. And what Buddhist masters drink. And an 85-year old farmer who is down to 30 cups a day instead of 50!! geez! It was more than worth the $45 for the class which will be held every Friday morning from 10-12. 20% discount on anything you might want to get when you are there. I stopped at one of the best bakeries in San Anselmo, a restaurant called M.H. Bread and Butter (recommended by Eric), started by a former Tartine baker (which was supposed to be one of the best bakeries in the world). I ate bread all the way home (try their Country Loaf) which I think absorbed some of the matcha in my system. But... truth be told, I think I can have my afternoon almond-milk matcha right about now.

I had a great time today with Eric and another guest as we chatted about and drank matcha tea. I learned a lot, was able to get all my questions answered about the best way to make it, and tried coldbrew matcha for the first time. Eric was a lot of fun to chat with too, so all in all, it was quite a nice way to spend the morning!
