Co budeš dělat

We begin the tour in the heart of 'The West' at the secondhand bookshop 'Bell Book and Candle', that is so much more than a bookshop. We begin to look at some of the sites associated with the work of Ken Bruen and his famous creation 'Jack Taylor', a dark detective series popular on 'Netflix'. Next up we look at the work of Walter Macken, one of the greats of 20th Century Irish literature and one of the founders of 'kitchen sink' dramas. The dramatic, and somewhat eccentric happenings around his home are explored.

After seeing the summer residence of Lady Gregory, that great patron of the arts, we head through Nun's island, hot on the trail of James Joyce's links to Galway. Then it's over to the childhood home of Nora Barnacle, the wife (and muse perhaps) of the enigmatic writer.

Later we head through the Latin Quarter and via a couple of our famous theaters before ending up in the heart of the city at the Spanish Arch.

We will always weave into the tour whatever we can from the Galway Arts festival along the way...it might be an opening, an exhibition or a piece of public art...you never know what Galway will throw at you !

Finally we end up in one of Galway's coolest cafe's for a cuppa and a slice of cake (or two)

Galway 2020 is a fantastic time for our city. The organising committee have asked me to show their VIP guests from all around the world our city in order to give them a real local 'feel' of the culture than runs deep in our DNA .I am so pleased to now be able to offer the same service to our Air b'n'b guests !

I've been attended concerts, plays, exhibitions, parades and public art every year for the last decade. I've always had a keen interest in writers who have used Galway as the backdrop to their writings...from Walter Macken to Ken Bruen to James Joyce. I've written a series of articles looking at how the arts have interacted with our unique city to produce a truly vibrant atmosphere.

This was a great tour. It was off the beaten path and different from the other tours offered. It focused on the arts, music, and literature scene in Galway. Neil was a great tour guide that showed us the beauty of the City. Thanks, Neil!

We had a fascinating walk with Neil around the literary corner of Galway. Past the house of Walter Macken the great historical novelist, author of the classic Seek the Fair Land, Neil all the time filling us in on back stories about Macken. Then on to the house of James Joyce’s beloved Nora Barnacle with more stories of her earlier ill fated romances and Joyce’s jealousies. Ken Bruen creator of the popular Jack Taylor character is also a native of that area. Druid theatrical history and it’s renowned Mick Lally Theatre are also on the route. The city museum was closed, it being early February but that didn’t take from an enjoyable afternoon. We recommend it.
