Co budeš dělat
After meeting the potter, guest will get to see the work environment and be able to look at work previously done. A short video and/or talk will be given to instruct them on what the process looks like and describe what they will be doing. Then the guess will get to pick out a previously made ceramic piece that would be placed into the kiln. This piece will be theirs to decorate when it is removed from the kiln about 30 to 45 minutes later. Each guest will be coached as how to apply sugar, feathers and or horsehair to the piece they chose to do. While the pieces are in the kiln being brought to temperature, the time will be used for questions and answers and any discussion concerning pottery and this process. Also demos of wheel throwing or other techniques will be done. Before the guest actually do their piece with this technique, the potter will remove a piece from the kiln and do a live demo of the process. When this has been completed, each guest will have their opportunity to decorate the piece they had chosen. When the process is completed, each person will get to take home the item they did. This is a highly unique experience. It might be watched on YouTube or other places, but it is a rare chance to actually participate. It is interesting to watch but exciting to do!
I am an experienced professional potter. I received my BA in ceramics at Minnesota State University at Moorhead with honors in 2011 but had several years experience prior to participating in the undergraduate program. One of my experiences while attending was to be mentored by world know potter Brad Bachmeier in the art of Raku. Raku originated in Japan and is a method by which the potter takes pots out of a kiln while red hot. I work with applying sugar, feathers and horsehair to the surface while it is hot, which creates a very unique look. There are lots of potters but only a small number utilize this technique. I am one. I have assisted Brad Bachmeier demoing to students and prospective students. I have demonstrated this technique to many. I offer my skill to help others experience a one of kind experience.
