Kaprije, Chorvatsko

Kaprije is a sleepy Adriatic island with crystal clear sea and marvellous sunsets, ideal for quiet vacation away of tourist crowds, without motorways and cars, in authentic Mediterranean setting scented with lavender and rosemary.Kaprije is a sleepy Adriatic island with crystal clear sea and marvellous sunsets, ideal for quiet vacation away of tourist crowds, without motorways and cars, in authentic Mediterranean setting scented with lavender and rosemary.

Your only task is to reach Sibenik. Then you can relax and let your hosts arrange everything else.

If you are arriving by car, we will meet you at the Sibenik town entrance and take you to the parking lot in front of our house (free of charge) where we can look after your car during your stay in Kaprije (cars are not allowed on the island).
We will go to Kaprije by boat together and transport your luggage to the apartment.

In case you are coming by bus or by train, we will meet you at the station.

If you are arriving by plane or by boat to Split or Zadar, we can organize a transfer to Sibenik (airport shuttle).

Regular ship lines connect Kaprije island with Sibenik four times a day. Jadrolinija ferry departs from Sibenik at 11:30 and 16:30 (on Sundays only at 11:30). Catamaran line departs every day at 8:15 and 20:00.
The trip with Jadrolinija ferry takes 80 minutes. Time will quickly pass because you will feel that your vacations started the moment you embarked. Instead of sitting in the spacious cabin, go to the top deck. While you are enjoying in the sun, your look will drift away attracted by the clash of the blue sea and flashing-white wild shores rinsed by waves and crowned with the rich green pine forest. The ferry will return from Kaprije at dusk. It will squeeze between some of 242 islets of the Sibenik archipelago while distant dark-orange fireball slowly sinks into the deep blue sea.
Catamaran line will take you to Kaprije in 60 minutes.
Ticket price: 23 kn (3,10 €)

If you decide to enrich your vacations by visiting other beauties of the Sibenik county, hop on the fast morning line in Kaprije and then choose some of the one-day excursions from Sibenik.

1) Historical town centre of Sibenik

Sibenik is situated in a bay naturally protected from all winds and storms, where "the limestone beauty" Krka river enters the Adriatic and where some of the very first Croatian settlers saw the sea for the first time.
In this stony structure, the soul of local people has grown into the labyrinth of narrow medieval streets. Traditional "klapa" singing and aromas of famous Sibenik wines are present between the houses at all times. As soon as you enter the town, it will take your heart, no matter if you arrive from the sea, beneath one of the four fortresses, or beside the magnificent cathedral of St.Jacob… You will easily fall in love with Sibenik.

2) Kornati national park

Like the first love that finds a place in your heart forever, the Kornati archipelago will captivate you with their pure beauty and the atmosphere you will never forget.
Naked stony landscape with 89 islands, islets and reefs will leave you breathless. Cliffs facing the open sea steeply plunge into the sea depths, as if some giant cut them with his gigantic knife. On the opposite side, the turquoise sea splashes sandy beaches. This unique archipelago will thrill you and you will only think how to come back and stay longer, sailing from islet to islet.

On the last day of the Creation, God desired to crown His work,
and thus created the Kornati islands out of tears, stars and breath.

George Bernard Shaw

3) Krka national park

Krka river creates a chain of lace-like masterpieces along its way from the source to the mouth. Every morning the first rays of light rediscover the magnificence of more than 17 natural cascades.
Skradinski buk is the longest and the most beautiful cascade of the Krka river. It is one of the best known natural beauties of Croatia.
Water mills on the cascades are ancient establishments where the power of the water stream, via wooden toothed wheels, rotates the stone that grinds wheat or corn and produces flour.
In the past, clothes and blankets were washed in stamping mills at the middle of a stream, thus getting fresh natural scent and cleanness.
Krka hides one islet like a priceless treasure in the Visovac lake. This oasis of peace and harmony contains Franciscan monastery built in the 15th century.
With its beauties, Krka offers an exceptional experience of nature and the old times that seem to be trapped there forever.

As Kaprije is located far from cities, industry or any other source of pollution, its shores are rinsed by the sea of exceptional clarity.
Some thirty meters from our house, next to the olive groves and rosemary shrubs, you will find an array of little paved beaches with stairs for easier entry to the sea. Spend a day sunbathing alone at the beach in front of our house in absolute peace, accompanied only by the soothing sound of the sea and crickets.
In the base of the Kaprije cove, fifteen minutes from our house, you will find a shallow gravel beach ideal for your children.
Another ten minutes away, a path between ancient dry-walls of vineyards and olive groves takes you to a true gem of the Kaprije island. The Nozdra cove is a savage place for those searching for a return to the primitive, uncontaminated and profoundly Mediterranean ambient, full of colours, tastes and scents. Natural white pebbly beach and large smooth flat rocks that are perfect for comfortable sunbathing, frame the turquoise sea and create contrast of irresistible beauty. If you prefer shade, you will find it under the pine trees that grow right next to the beach.
When you get thirsty or hungry after swimming, refreshments are waiting for you in the bar or in the restaurant on the other side of the Nozdra cove. Both objects are very nice, with stone facades blended with the countryside.
If you have some explorer's spirit, you have opportunity to use our small motor boat. It will allow you to discover more distant, pristine beaches of the Kaprije island and of surrounding islets.
Next to the neighbouring Kakan island, the blue lagoon will enchant you with its Caribbean-blue colour. Such intensive colour is caused by the seabed that seems to be sandy at the first glance, but if you dive (it is about 3m deep), you will find out that the entire seabed is covered with little white shells. While you swim there, you will feel like you immersed yourself into some unusual fluid instead of the warm sea water.
To help you reach all these places, we prepared the map of the area, marked the most beautiful beaches of our choice and added their photos. You can find the map in the apartment, as well as the waterproof version that you can carry when you go for a walk or to a boat trip around the island.

If you like scuba diving, you may have heard about two famous diving locations on the Kaprije island. Ship Francesca da Rimini sunk during World War II. Thanks to excellent visibility, you can recognize the ship's contour even at the depth of 10 meters. At the Kaprije promontory you will find unforgettable underwater walls with caves full of life.
Diving centre Jadranska Galathea operates in Kaprije during some ten weeks in the May-October period. They offer diving trips and kayak rental. You can also arrange the diving with some of the other diving centres in Sibenik area which offer trips to these locations.

What makes me feel alive: - Meeting people from different cultures - Traveling (particularly to far, exotic destinations) - Leading Croatian-Brazilian Society - Popularizing science - Volunteering in education (teaching programming in primary school, managing local sailing school and competitions, etc.) - Organizing a series of lectures in the local library where I host popular Croatian travel writers - Designing and building unique architectural and furnishing solutions - Participating in a local weekly pub quiz competition - Dancing tango and salsa - Sailing with my sailing boat - Attending pop/rock concerts - Participating in travel festivals - Spending time with my wife, our 3 children and with friends - Dreaming BIG! Random silly item from my bucket list: Winter sea swimming: keep on swimming regularly all year long, in spite of the coldness. The most adrenaline rushing thing I've ever done: Running vertically on the facade, from the roof of a scary tall building (at the inauguration of Hypo bank business center in Zagreb). Book that had the most impact on my life: - Fiction: Jonathan Livingstone Seagull (Richard Bach) - Non-fiction: The 4-Hour Workweek (Timothy Ferriss) My favourite movie: - Hollywood production: Matrix (1999) - Non-Hollywood production: Central Station (Central do Brasil, 1998) A movie that I recently saw which pleasantly surprised me: Warrior (2011) The most interesting article I read recently: There is one blog that I follow called Zablogreb, but I can’t pick a single post because most of them are great. Cody is an American professor (with PhD in political science) who married a Croatian and then moved to Croatia. His creative and funny insight shows socio-cultural differences between Americans and Croatians (which are mostly applicable to other Europeans as well). He recently adapted this blog into a (bilingual) book, currently among top 10 bestsellers in Croatia. Knowledge/experience that I can share: - Leisure topics: Independent traveling, exotic destinations, Brazilian culture, music, raising children, breaking free from a corporation “golden cage”, lifestyle change (moving from a city to a small village or a small island) - Professional topics: telecommunication, computer science, project management, process management (e.g. SOX certification), business planning/analysis, marketing, photography, design, tourism, portuguese language My favorite quotes: “You cannot swim for new horizons until you have courage to lose sight of the shore.” (William Faulkner) “You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one” (John Lennon) “Una vida bien vivida – a life well lived” (San Miguel slogan) My life in 400 words: I was born in 1975 in Sibenik, a small Croatian coastal town. I finished Natural Sciences Grammar School in 1993 and moved to Zagreb to study. There I discovered my passion for traveling and getting to know other cultures. In parallel with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, I studied Portuguese Language and Literature at the Faculty of Philosophy (where I enrolled after my return from internship in Brazil). At that time, together with several similar enthusiasts, I co-founded Croatian branch of student organization Board of European Students of Technology (BEST) and Croatian-Brazilian Society where I am still president (meanwhile the society grew to a few hundred members). When I graduated as an engineer (and as professor of Portuguese), I got job in marketing department of a multinational telecom company, where I remained for 9 years. At the position of Roaming Manager I gained valuable experience in managing people, products/services, international projects, processes and strategy. I also got a chance to visit wonderful parts of the world, either on business trips, or traveling independently. Besides most European countries, I visited India, Thailand, Cambodia, Japan (2x), Zanzibar/Tanzania, Mauricius, Cape Verde, Cuba, Bolivia, Brazil (4x)... When my children were born (in 2006, 2009 and 2012) I decided to change the lifestyle and to pursue my vision of a calm family life in balance with a job where I would be liable only to my customers. I left the corporation and big city, and together with my family I returned to my home region (Dalmatia). We settled in a quiet coastal village close to my hometown, and I fully devoted myself to tourism. I used experience from my travels and my professional experience gained in a multinational corporation, in effort to raise tourist service level in my community, both through growth of my private accommodation business and through volunteering as the vice-president of the Association of Private Accommodation Owners in Croatian Chamber of Commerce. My other volunteering activities include: - teaching programming in local primary school (Code Club) once a week in the past 3 years - organizing a series of lectures in the local library where I host the most famous travel writers from all over Croatia - being a board member of the local sailing club (organizing the sailing school and competitions) - president of the Croatian-Brazilian Society and organizer of a yearly Brazilian festival - active member of a local quiz association
