In western Slovenia, between the rivers Soča and Tolminka, at the junction of the Soča valley, Baška grapa and Idrija valley, lies Tolmin. It was awarded the Alpine town of the year 2016 for its efforts in the field of sustainable development.

For lovers of wild waters, Soča is one of the most desirable destinations in Europe. You can go to the rafting, kayaking, or other sports adventures with local sports agency guides. You will need a permit for independent navigation on the river.

Because prior knowledge is not needed, almost everyone can take the unique challenge. Sports agencies organizing downhill events provide the necessary equipment, a professional guide for safe navigation and transport to the river and back to the starting point.
Picturesque gorge, waterfalls and pools can be enjoyed by visitors on a popular canyon. Canyoning or canyoning is allowed under the guidance of domestic guides on the Pršjak stream (near Trebuša) and Sušec (near Srpenica).
If you are looking for the most authentic experience of the Soča river rapids and if you would like to know how to swim over the emerald waves, the river bob is the right activity for you.
SUP (Stand up paddleboarding) descends with the paddleboard. In the valley of the Soča River, you can choose between exciting surfing along the Soča river waves or peaceful rowing along the lake.

Tolmin, Slovinsko

Tolmin is the largest town and an administrative centre of the Soča river valley. It features a high school and an excellent library and its greatest attractions are the old town centre, great sports facilities and the Museum of Tolmin where one can explore the history of the whole Posočje region.

Only a short walk from the town we can admire the untamed Tolmin gorges, the lowest entrance into the Triglav National Park, and a few kilometres away we can see Javorca, the most beautiful monument from the times when the First World War unleashed upon the Posočje region. It was entered into the list of European cultural heritage in 2006. The Tolmin municipality consists of several regions.

One can explore the story of Most na Soči, the famous archaeological site by a picturesque lake, by taking a walk along the cultural [&] historical path. The valley of Idrijca river is a popular spot among summer swimmers.

Trebuša is famous for its secluded country homes, gorges and waterfalls.

In addition to a breathtaking view, the plateau Šentviška planota also features the splendid Mary’s Church – one of the last creations of the renowned architect Plečnik.

In addition to ordinary trains, a museum train (steam-powered) and a car train (the most comfortable way of travelling between Bohinj and Bled) traverse Baška Grapa on the more than a century old tracks.

The tradition of alpine cattle ranches and with them the famous Tolmin cheese still survives in the surrounding mountain pastures.

The Tolmin gorges are Tolmin’s most important sight of nature.

The Tolmin gorges are the lowest and southernmost entry point into the Triglav National Park and Tolmin’s most important sight of nature. The most prominent attractions are the wedged rock named Bear's Head and the Devil’s Bridge, 60 metres high above the bluish Tolminka River.

Thermal spring
There is a thermal spring in the short horizontal cave under the Devil’s bridge, with an average temperature of between 18.8 and 20.8 °C (the temperature of the Tolminka River is 5 to 9 °C).

Devil’s Bridge
Devil’s Bridge (Hudičev most) and the road leading to the village of Zadlaz Čadrg were commissioned in 1907 by the Tolmin mayor’s office. The bridge was originally made of wood, and was later, under the Italian government, replaced with iron. At that time the bridge was given its name that is still used today. Devil’s Bridge is a common name for bridges in Slovenia that cross narrow, deep gorges.

The Confluence of the Tolminka and the Zadlaščica, the lowest point of The Triglav National Park
The two rivers then widen and merge into, what is in fact the only confluence of gorges in Slovenia. This confluence (“Sotočje”) lies at approximately 180 m above sea-level and is the lowest point of the Triglav National Park.

The marble trout in the Zadlaščica
The Zadlaščica is a sanctuary for marble trout.

The »Bear’s head« and skakalce
Medvedova glava is the name of a natural bridge – a large rock which got stuck, who knows when, between the walls of the Zadlaščica canyon. The rock covered with moss aroused the imagination of human beings long, long ago – indeed, it looks like a hairy bear’s head.

Since the water of the Zadlaščica literally jumps from one pool to another, it creates picturesque cascades flowing through the gorge which is why the locals started calling it Skakalce or in English “the Jumps”.

The cave of Zadlaška jama (Dante’s cave)
The cave of Zadlaška jama, named after the village Zadlaz, is one of several caves through which the waters of the Soča glacier flowed. This cave complex is 1.140 m long, 41 m deep and boasts three halls.

The Triglav National Park is one of the oldest European parks and the only national park in Slovenia. It is among the earliest parks to have been established in the Alps and one of the greatest natural treasures of Slovenia.

The park was founded in 1906. Its current size was adopted in 1981 and now covers the area of the Eastern Julian Alps (84,000 hectares). The highest point of the park is the peak of Mt. Triglav (2864 m), which also gave the park its name, whilst its lowest point lies in Tolmin Gorges (180 m).

The main objective of the park is to protect and to preserve the outstanding natural and cultural values which can be found among the Alpine peaks, in crystal clear waters, deep-cut gorges, the remains of virgin forests, rich Alpine flowers and the typical animal kingdom and in the outstanding cultural and historical heritage of the area.
