An original 1940's fishing shack, my lovely 3-bedroom home is perched right on Little Norfolk Bay. Filled with character, charm and an abundance of Australian artwork, though nothing beats the view of the water by day or blanketing of stars by night. Just 10 mins to Port Arthur and 45 mins from the airport, the shack is the perfect base to explore the spectacular southeast. And with reading nooks aplenty, a wood fire and super fast wifi, it is also the perfect spot to stay in and get cosy.

Prostor
The shack is just an hour’s drive from Hobart, and yet feels worlds away from it all. The perfect weekend escape!

The space is colourful and comfortable—you won’t find a bigger lounge—and is drenched in natural light. It’s been decorated with love and the walls are an ever evolving gallery of local artists.

There are three bedrooms (2x double, 1x king single/small double) as well as plenty of areas to hang out and socialise or chill out and read, both inside and outside.

It can get cold in winter, but there’s a wood fire, heaters and plenty of blankets. And, as they say, a cardigan to be found in every bottle of wine.

Please be aware that a 1940s shack in rural Tasmania offers a very different experience to a 5-star hotel. But that’s exactly what I love about the place, and I hope that you will too.

Přístup pro hosty
Guests have access to the whole house, comprising three bedrooms, bathroom, large open plan living and dining areas, sunroom, huge deck overlooking the bay, tropical garden with hammock, and a lovely fireplace for the winter.

**Please note the back door and back garden is currently off limits due to ongoing maintenance**

Další věci, které stojí za zmínku
Being situated in rural Tasmania, the shack provides a great escape from city living. Some people like the idea of that, but not so much the reality! There will be wildlife aplenty (the cute kind, the creepy crawly kind, and the cock-a-doodle-dooing kind).

There will be bugs that decide to live or die in the shack between my cleaner leaving and you arriving. (As I said, rural Tasmania!) But there’s always a good supply of super strength bug spray underneath the kitchen sink.

We’re on tank water so water consumption is limited, including super speedy showers. (The shower door is very rickety but, again, 1940s shack not 5-star hotel.)

There are limited shops and petrol down here so be sure to stock up in Sorell!

Peninsula food shops: Nubeena, Eaglehawk Neck, Port Arthur, Premaydena.

Peninsula petrol stations: Forcett, Dunalley, Murdunna, Nubeena.

Keep an eye out for roadside vendors selling fresh cherries, oysters, fish and fresh cray rolls along the way. Yum!

If you get here after 5.30pm and the shops are shut, Pirates Bay has a great Fish and Chips shop at the end of Blowhole Rd, Eaglehawk Neck, which operates Sept - May and closes around sunset each day. Failing that, there is a very 80s hotel pub called the Lufra which is generally ok.

If you need coffee there's an awesome coffee van at Pirates Bay Lookout, check out @cubedespresso (not Tues/Wed), or 9am-8pm at the Lavender Farm (all year around), both a ten minute drive away.

What is provided:
- all beddings (ethically sourced cotton sheets, bamboo mattresses, therma quilts, memory foam pillows)
- 1x towel for each guest
- hairdryer
- tea + coffee (BYO milk), oil, salt + pepper, sugar, limited herbs + spices
- toilet paper (3 rolls), washing-up liquid and cloths, hand soap, bin bags, bug spray
- million dollar views

What’s not provided:
- washing machine
- TV
- microwave
- dishwasher
- BBQ
- firewood and firelights (please grab some in town)
- shower items (BYO)
- cot

The lack of mod-cons (sans internet!) is very much intentional.

* COVID meant no creative residencies in 2020 so there aren’t any murals at present, but there’s still plenty of artwork hanging on the walls. The closed borders also meant the shack was looking a little neglected for a while there (I’m based in Melbourne) but all has been rectified now, including beautiful new furniture and bedding, a thorough spring clean and a fresh lick of paint, and an updated selection of Airbnb photos :)

Taranna, Tasmánie, Austrálie

The house is located on Arthur Hwy, with Little Norfolk Bay directly opposite, giving amazing water views and ease of finding the house.

Things to do on the Tasman Peninsula:

Nature - Pirate Bay lookout (before you get to Eaglehawk Neck from Hobart), the far end of White Beach is really pretty or drive out to Lime Bay (dirt road). If you want to see some Tasmania devils, there is the Unzoo a couple of minutes from the house.

Active - there's a ton of hikes locally: Waterfall Bay (easy), Cape Huay, Shipstern Bluff (3 hours), The Lanterns, Fortescue Bay (4 hours worth it!), the 3 Capes just opened - looks amazing!

History - If history is more your thing, Port Arthur convict settlement run amazing tours and is only 10km south of the house. Recommend the boat tour, and taking most of the day to explore. Also near Lime Bay is the Coal Mines, a nice walk if the weather is good.

Food - Eat yummy fresh food; cherries (just south of Sorell is cherry farms, stop and grab some for the ride. The A9 heads south and is a beautiful drive), cray rolls (in Dunalley stop at the general store on Booth St and grab fresh cray rolls for lunch, yum. There's a viewing pull out over looking Dunalley Bay when you leave Dunalley - the sand ridges and turquoise water are beautiful), oysters (on the deck with a cold chardonnay), amazing locally made chutney, pickled fruit, quince (Nubeena op shop open Tues 10-3, Fri 10-3, Sat 10-1), fish and chips (Eaglehawk Neck near the pier, open late Sept - late May)

Shopping - Op shopping is great in rural areas; Salvos (Station Lane, Sorell), Vinnies (Sorell), antiques at Murdunna (tiny old Post Office converted into a treasure trove of goodies), Nubeena (behind the petrol station, by the tennis courts), Dunalley (behind the community centre).

Chill at the house - cheese platter on the deck, red wine by the fire, board games galore, read a book, and make sure you walk down to the jetty with some blankets and check out the stars…

Hobart:
MONA for the day (you can drive (easy), hire bikes (hard), or get the MONA ferry (fun - but an extra $20 on your ticket price), Tasmanian Muséum and Art Gallery is worth the trip, book an adorable and individual room at the gorgeous Hotel Alabama run by Kelly and Aeron in town, Mt Wellington for views, Criterion Street Cafe for breakie, or coffee at Betsys on Argyle st and say g'day to Charlie the owner.

Extra time:
Coles Bay, Strathgordon, Bay of Fires, Cradle Mountain, Trainee National Park, Bruny Island, Launceston gorge, The Apple Shed (best cider in Tasmania, and yummy cheese platters) plus great drives.
