Parks & Nature

Fowlsheugh which is old gaelic for "bird cliff" is well named. The huge cliffs just north of the old fishing village of Crawton are home to the largest RSPB bird reserve in the mainland UK with over 170,000 birds nesting between April and late July. There is ample parking and a well maintained clifftop path provides a chance to see Fulmars, Razorbills, Guillemots and Kittiwakes. If you are really lucky you might also see the Puffins. To find them you'll need to walk about a mile along the cliff top path to a well maintained viewing shelter. The Puffins nest in the small caves and burrows near the top of the cliff, just below the shelter. The are best seen from the opposite side of the steep gully, looking back towards the south. Good luck!
