One of my favorite places

There are few true wonders of the world, where merely entering a space creates a portal of cosmic proportions. There is The Waverly in N.Y., Musso Frank’s in Hollywood, certain vortexes in Sedona, Arizona, El Greco in Toledo, Spain. But none of these can touch the magic that is Pappy and Harriet’s. I have been coming to Pappy’s for over 20 years and have witnessed remarkable transformations that continue to stun me, while this establishment manages to keep the integrity of the original seed planted so long ago. Pappy’s is not a noun, it’s a verb, and the kinetic energy is palpable. Situated in the hauntingly mysterious Pioneer Town (at an elevation of 4000 ft) unveiled is the entire Milky Way galaxy; coyotes howling in the distance and hoot owls swooping down at eye level. Then you walk into Pappy’s and that’s when things get interesting. A lawless freedom sweeps through the soul and do with it what you will. A cross between an 1800’s saloon where you’d see Billy the kid throwing back a whisky, and women in petticoats dancing on tables, to the most impressive eclectic performers ever to grace the stage. It is one of my favorite venues for bands, some famous and some about to be famous. That would be enough. But then there’s the food which is absolutely delectable. Anthony Bourdain apparently thought so because he shot an episode here with Josh Homme. The bartenders are something to behold, like samurai; tough and beautiful and when you catch a smile the whole night is worth it. Whether it’s Robert Plant or Paul McCartney making surprise appearances; the high desert’s own Mohave Lords, Victoria Williams, and L.A.’s Cherry Glazerr (a few of my favorites) or the deep roots of the locals who have been here since time began, like the creosote growing in the desert, this is truly one of the most precious jewels this side of the Mississippi and the other side for that matter. So at the risk of gushing, I truly love this place. Sunday nights are usually free music and The Sunday Band is one of the greatest bands around. I would definitely try to book in advance if you are having dinner as it gets kind of crazy.

Truly one of my favorite places. Check out the calendar first as hours vary. This is one of the last unpretentiously cool places left on earth and Laura who runs it is an absolute dream..actually speaking of dreams, when she was 15 she had a dream that this place existed, which maybe it did in the collective unconscious , but not in physical manifestation at the time. But what is time? The Hopi Indians believe there is no past, present or future. Only beginning to manifest or already manifest. So Laura told her mom about her dream and they built it. Maybe that’s where the magic comes from. Or maybe it’s from her cooking. She makes the best potato fries I have ever tasted. Plus the neighborhood feels like you are in the middle of nowhere but it’s only 25 minutes from our house. This place is really famous and yet it’s not. How does that happen?

Honestly, regarding used book stores, this is not my first time round the rodeo...and this one is an absolute gem! You never know what treasures you will find here. Before moving to the desert years ago, when visiting, this was a must stop for me! Check website as hours vary but I’m pretty sure they are opened Thursday-Sunday. The owner is so great! This is the coolest place! I won’t lie, it can be a little pricy, but it saves you the time of scouring flea markets yourself and smelling weird unfamiliar smells to find the best records, magazines etc. The owners have impeccable taste and every single item in here is pretty much mind blowing.

This place is amazing, and a beautiful trip from our home. There’s a really cool little one room church on the property and a glass outhouse! We purchased the paintings in our hallway from a show that special needs kids did from yucca valley high school . I think they were 10$ each and we worship them!

This place has great tacos, and the outdoor eating area has such beautiful views. This area in pioneer town is one of my favorites. It harkens back to a time when some made their way by working on ranches and farms, others by trapping and trading fur, and some by toiling deep in the mines of the new American frontier. Life was full of dangers. Sandstorms, tornados, and hurricanes plagued their ramshackle homes. The natives of the land fought to keep it their own. None of this happened here...this was more like an old western film set for Tom mix and Gene Autry...but you can imagine that it did...and you wouldn’t be wrong... Anyway, super cool feeling up there. The elevation alone changes things and pioneer town is a must see. About 35 min from our house if you just turn left on 29 Palms highway, drive about a half hour through yucca valley, and turn right on pioneer town, then go all the way to the top. You will almost immediately get that Fred flinstone/ Barney Rubble feeling. Keep going till you reach the center of town. The ride alone is worth it!

This is a place you have to google to really get the full low down. It’s pretty astounding. The Integratron is a historical structure — a resonant tabernacle and energy machine sited on a powerful geomagnetic vortex near Joshua Tree. Magnetometers read a significant spike in the earth’s magnetic field in the center of the Integratron. Sound baths are available for private or public groups but have to be booked in advance.

While making your way through Joshua Tree, visit the home prison of a man who never existed. According to some very detailed lore constructed by artist Eames Demetrios, a religious leader named Krblin Jihn lived in this cabin under house arrest after a rival sect, the Notgeon, defeated his Jihn Wranglikans in a long war. While living in the Kabin, he completed two translations of the Bible and the Kmmentaries n Matthew. (By the way, the Jihn Wranglikans forbid using the letters “c” and “o.”) Don’t worry: You can brush up on the mythology before entering the Kabin (where all writings are in the Jihn Wranglikan dialect). There’s an English explanation on a site marker just outside the house. The world-building is so extensive that you can even glimpse a structure known as Kwale—the Jihn Wranglikan Mount Hermon. The Kabin is part of Demetrios’ “Kcymaerxthaere” project, an “ongoing work of 3 dimensional fiction” that tells its stories in text plaques and, sometimes, “historic sites” like the Kabin (which, in 2004, became the first such site dedicated as part of the project). Kcymaerxthaere constructs an alternative universe along 29 major “rezhns;” Demetrios likens it to “a novel where every page is in a different city.” The plaques and sites number in the hundreds and continue to expand, while the Kabin stands as one of the most audacious examples of Joshua Tree’s famous artistic culture. You can learn more about the Jihn Wranglikans and Kcymaexthaere here. Know Before You Go From the town of Joshua Tree, travel north on Sunburst St./Ave. Turn right on Crestview Drive. Go through the neighborhood to the end of the street and turn right on Border Avenue (dirt road). The site will be on your left, about 1.5 blocks south of Crestview.

Joshua tree hiking and driving in the park

Of course. You can google different hikes to take once you are in the park. Some great ones are the Ryan hike (if you are extremely fit and want an amazing workout). It’s all uphill to the top but the views are sensational. Bring lunch and have a picnic once there. I think it’s about 3 or 4 miles total. The 29 palms entrance to the park is only 10 miles from our house, and then maybe another 10 miles to Ryan. Another incredible hike is the lost horse mine trail. Once in the park (from 29 palms entrance) take keys view road, past cap rock, to lost horse trail road which will be about half mile to your left. Drive down the dirt road about a half mile and there you will see the sign posts. This is about 4 1/2 miles total but kid friendly, just a slight upgrade of a climb on the way to the old mine (which was one of the largest producing mines of its day and still in tact), and smooth sailing all the way back to your car.

This is such a great trail! You can google directions from your phone or on the all trails app. It is under lost horse mine loop and says it’s 6 miles but that’s if you keep going past the mine. To get to the mine and back is 4 miles. The story goes that an old cowboy named Johnny Lang had lost his horse one fine dusty day while camping. He went searching high and low into the hills of what is now Joshua Tree. He met a man who told him of a “rich claim” and the man sold it to Johnny for 1000$ in the late 1800’s. Johnny named the mine “Lost horse”. To reduce the chances of being killed by the McHaney gang or having his claim jumped, Johnny took three partners. After filing their claim, they set up a two-stamp mill and began processing gold. He ended up making millions and from 1894-1931 it produced 10,000 ounces of gold and 16,000 ounces of silver. The lost horse mine was one of the only mines to produce any real gold for its owner. In 1895 J.D. Ryan bought the rights to the area and set up the mill that is currently there today. The mine stopped producing in 1905 when the miners lost the vein they were mining from. Johnny never did find that horse but who cares... Talk about not looking a gift horse in the mouth!

Keys View is a popular viewpoint in Joshua Tree National Park and is the perfect vantage point from which to admire the vast California desert. On a clear day the panoramic views are breath taking: the Coachella Valley, the San Andreas Fault, the Salton Sea, and the highest peak in Southern California, the 11,500 foot San Gorgonio Mountain are all visible.

You just drive off our property, turn left on Sherman Rd, turn left on 29 Palms Hwy, and then left on Indian Cove (about a mile away). Drive up to the top of the hill and just explore. Amazing sightseeing of Indian cove campground, and some small hikes.

This is about a 35 minute trip from our house, and such a beautiful journey! You can walk down these cowboy streets that used to be movie sets for old Tom Mix films. Then stop in at Pappy and Harriets’s for a 🍺 beer and a 🍔 burger or garden burger (my fave).
