Puy du Fou is a historical theme park in Les Epesses in the heart of the Vendee region of Western France. The park brings in some 1.5 million visitors every year, making it the fourth most popular attraction in France after Disneyland Paris. It started in 1978 as an open-air amateur dramatics night where volunteers in the grounds of a ruined castle re-enacted the bloody history of the Vendee in western France. It has become one of the countrys biggest success stories. Its trademark is spectacular history extravaganza shows, where thousands of actors and animals recreate high drama, from Roman gladiators to King Arthur, with mind-blowing special effects.

The castle of Azay-le-Rideau is built on an island in the Indre in the reign of Francis. Subtle combination of French traditions and innovative designs from Italy, he is an icon of the new art of building of the Loire-Val in the XVI th century. Its owners have helped make it the most harmonious architectural jewel of the Val de Loire. In 1905, the state became the owner of the castle of Azay-le-Rideau.

The 13 hectares over which the various buildings are spread, today teeming with life (artists, visitors, conference attendees), illustrate the importance of an Abbey that was directly attached to royalty. The reclining effigies of Eleanor of Aquitaine, of her husband Henry 2nd and of their son Richard the Lionheart, seen in the Abbey Church, are a reminder of this glorious past. To stroll along the cloister, to visit the chapter house or the kitchens of the Royal Abbey, gives an understanding of the daily lives of the nuns who lived here. Not forgetting its later incarnation, in the 19th century, as one of the toughest prisons in France …

Thouars is one of those pretty French towns that few people have ever heard of. It has many beautiful old houses and streets, a wonderful chateau, a lovely river, the best market in the area (Friday mornings). Situated between the larger towns of Saumur and Poitiers, Thouars is a perfect setting-off point for visiting the Loire Valley, the Limousin, The Poitou Maritime region and the Vendee.
