Quinta da Bacalhoa Azeitão, Portugal. Much has been written about Quinta da Bacalhôa, but the conclusion is always the same: it is a Masterpiece. Renowned Portuguese and foreign historians have spent countless hours piecing together a life that spans over 400 years.
The visit to the Museum is also a memorable, incessantly surprising experience, pass through the cellar garden planted with transplanted millenary olive trees from the Alqueva dam, or admire the tranquil scenery of the Japanese Garden, in which part of sculptor Niizuma's estate and kaki tree, the great-granddaughter of the only tree surviving the Nagasaki bomb, is exhibited.

Azeitão – the Sintra of the South. The region of Azeitão disputed with Sintra the preferences of noblemen and aristocrats. Nowadays, Azeitão presents buildings of some importance as Sintra, and displays areas of great beauty, that convert it into a pleasant summer resort.
Azeitão is the name normally used to refer to a group of settlements that are of particular interest to tourists, including the fascinating villages of Vila Nogueira de Azeitão and Vila Fresca de Azeitão.
Shaded by the Serra da Arrábida, the region became prestigious from the 15th century when noble families moved in.
Today, Azeitão stands out for its bucolic peace, the relevance of history present in every building, the friendliness of its inhabitants and, particularly the gastronomic experiences it offers.
We recommend you walk across the area, so as to not miss out on any of the charms of the Azeitão villages.
The well-kept and flowery streets are hallmarks of Vila Fresca de Azeitão, where the Church of St. Simon, the traditional artisan workshops, the fountain and the Palace of Bacalhôa are unmissable.
The charms continue in Vila Nogueira. Quinta das Torres, the Palace of the Dukes of Aveiro, the Church of St. Lawrence, the Pasmados Fountain and the José Maria da Fonseca winery house-museum are some places of interest.
The República Square, best known as Rossio, where we find the statue honouring the poet of Azeitão, Sebastião da Gama, is a pleasant leisure space shaded by enormous sycamore trees.
The “azulejos” (traditional tiles), the cheese, the “tortas” (rolled lemon sponge cakes), the wine – particularly Moscatel – and the “esses” (cinnamon biscuits) of Azeitão are outstanding regional products.

The thriving port town of Setúbal (shtoo-bahl) makes a terrific base for exploring the region’s natural assets.Top of the must-do list is a cruise to the marshy wetlands of the Sado estuary, the splashy playground of bottlenose dolphins, flocks of white storks (spring and summer), and wintering flamingos that make the water fizz like pink champagne.
The Sado River bay was the first in Portugal to join the Club of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World.
Setúbal has been a member of this selective Club based in Vannes, France, since 14 November 2002.
Setúbal Bay is located within the National Ecological Reserve limit, and forms part of the Sado Estuary. Enriched by the magnificence of the mountains, the bay’s coastal area is home to some of Nature’s treasures, such as Portinho da Arrábida, one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal and the “Pedra da Anicha” (Anicha Rock), considered a Zoological Reserve.
Setúbal Bay is also the natural habitat of bottlenose dolphins, one of the rare sedentary communities of dolphins in Europe.
