If a restaurant is situated in the busiest part of town it doesn't make it touristy. Halkakas (Fishrooster) is a place where you can eat Hungarian quality fish. Why is this a thing? Despite of Hungary's richness in freshwaters, we are not big fish eaters and therefore you don't really get to eat either fresh or Hungarian fish in restaurants. Halkakas is a place where owners have a freshwater fish farm so beyond any doubt, their fish is not only tasty, but also fresh. I am sure they run out of their reasonably priced daily menu very quick but every dish of theirs has a great price related to the quality (I should have written this with capital letters :) ). Open every day from 12 - 22.

Gulyás (goulash), paprikás (paprikash), pörkölt (stew), three must taste traditional Hungarian dishes under one roof in unique atmosphere, great service and if you stay with us, we give you a dining card with gift home-made lemonade to your main course. Open every day 12 - 24. Don't miss it! If you get there in lunch time (from 12 to 12:30) you can taste their 3-course-menu - with foods from our childhood :). Price for lunch menu is more than fair, for other dishes it is reasonable. Booking in advance is useful. It is a small and busy place :).

The oldest restaurant in Budapest has gotten a modern design recently but Budapesters and tourist who knew it before recall its old-fashioned style with nostalgy. Luckily, they sticked to the traditional Hungarian dishes and prepare them in an unparalleled way... Grandma's kitchen. Truly. Performed by top chefs of the capital. Pest-Buda Bistro is the place to recharge your batteries during the discovery of the Castle District.

Queen Elizabeth, our beloved Sissi orderd her daily breakfast menu and mint bars from this confectionary. Ruszwurm is a place with 200-year-tradition. The entire interiors (furniture and equipment) miraculously survived battles and wars, are declared to be protected. A true time travel! Patinate, small and most of the time full of fellow-tourists who don't necesserly consume, just marvel. So if you want to eat a good piece of traditional Hungarian cake, make it sure that you don't queue up in vain :). The most iconic place in the Castle District, don't miss it!

However Firkász (in English 'Scribller' referring to journalists who continue to visit the restaurant since the last century) is well-known among tourists, its barflies are local Hungarian journalists, writers and poets, the pianist's distant friends who come to drink a fröccs (spritzer: wine and soda in different amounts) listen to him playing one or two pieces and stay. On top of this very homey atmosphere the place is vivid, food is traditional and tasty, service is excellent and quick.

Doboz is a cool place. A ruin bar with very smart design, with danceable music (8 different music styles vary during their party hours), 4 drink bars, good kitchen, and no queueing. In addition, this place is very safe, staff is very polite. Furthermore, a 300 years old tree stands in the middle of the yard hugged by a huge iron gorilla. The historical building complex was built on the occasion of the Millennial State Expo and Millennial Festivities of Hungary in 1896. A Romanesque, a Baroque revival and an early French Renaissance building are connected to each other in order to commemorate historical architectural styles in 3 dimension. It is stunning. Its court is home for local gastro and music festivals, the Romanesque church is the most popular building among wedding couples. The major mass of the complex houses the collection of the Hungarian Museum of Agriculture.

There are touristy parts and there are more authentic neighbourhoods in Budapest. Pozsonyi út and environs are the latter one. The main street of Újlipótváros starting at Jászai Mari tér (Margaret Bridge, Pest side) offers great shopping and dining opportunities from breakfast to dinner (check Firkász and Babka in my Guidebook). Most places are child-welcoming. No coincidence here, majority of inhabitants of the neighbourhood are families with young children. More than 5 well-equipped playgrounds in no time approach from Pozsonyi út. It is on the way to Buda and is situated very close to the Parliament. Where else to charge or recharge your and your children's battery during your holiday? :)

The artwork depicting four women under frazzled umbrellas is situated in the heart of Óbuda's historical center. Mueums, coffee houses, restaurants are some minutes walk from here. The statues are object of debate until today: what are they dedicated to? Originally entitled 'Expectants' are obviously tarts on sentry-go, waiting for clients. The sculptor got inspired during his journey in Paris.

The Royal Palace of Buda is perhaps the only royal edifice in the world that was built to serve representative purposes and never ever a king or queen have lived there. The court of the Royal Palace is home for great art/food/wine/music festivals all around the year. Its environs are being reconstructed. You get to see excavations and layouts of churches, palaces and castles from older times. Other remarkable buildings and happenings around: Sándor Palace with the change of guards, the Castle Garden Bazaar and the funicular. It gets extremely busy during the high season. It's much better to visit in the early morning or in the late afternoon when tourist buses are gone.

Well, this is underground :). Buda Hills are made of limestone, dolomite and sandstone and are also rich in thermal water. The latter one has formed numerous underground caves inside these relatively soft rocks. In Szemlő Hill Cave you'll see wonderful crystal formations and the air is exceptionally clean. The cave is open every day and is situated 30 minutes distance from the downtown by public transportation. Join their guided visits, we are glad to assist in booking. You can pass app. 3 hours with the visit, which is a smooth walk good for elderly people and children. And is amazing.

Funny, though, but called by a German name in English, Kunsthalle (Műcsarnok in Hungarian, in English it would be Art Gallery) was established at the end of the 19th century together with Heroes' Square and its surroundings for the ever most special occasion, for the 1000-year-existance of the Hungarian state. It has been the centre of Hungarian and international contemporary fine art and visual culture. Excellent, interesting contemporary exhibitions in a stunning historical building next to a must see sight, well, due to our opinion you should not miss this. However entrance fee is reasonable visiting Art Gallery with Budapest Card is friendlier.

Double contemporary alert! The museum and the building it is situated in are both providing outstanding experience for fans of contemporary art and architecture. The edifice, Palace of Arts houses Hungary's first exclusively contemporary collection with artworks of masters of American pop art. Eastern and Central European, Hungarian contemporary artist works are also on show. Colorful, vivid, actual exhibitions are waiting for you in LUMU. Guided tours (building and/or exhibitions) available on request. Get there directly from the center by tram number 2.

Mai Manó House, House of Hungarian Photographers is an iconic place. Its founder, Imperial and Royal Court Photographer from the turning of 19th and 20th centuries, Manó Mai built a Renaissance revival building and dedicated it to photography, an activity hardly considered to be a form of art in that time. Pictures of Hungarian photographers, group-presentations and retrospective exhibitions take place in 3 floors. You get the chance to see the founder's workroom, the Sunlight Studio and many other halls and ornamentation in original style. Visiting Mai Manó House with Budapest Card is free of charge.

Aquincum used to be the northernmost settlement of the Roman Empire. A city of 25000 inhabitants situated on the right (today Buda) bank of River Danube was built to protect the empire from barbarians living on the other side. There is a spacious outdoor section, the Archaeological Park with ruins in very good condition (sounds strange, I know :)) and many indoor exhibitions. Find information for summer, winter and holiday schedule in their opening hours and ticket prices on their website in English. Visit of Aquincum Museum is free for Budapest Card holders.
