Shopping

Supermarkets, markets and other shops
Shopping Local small supermarkets and bakeries: There are several small supermarkets and bakeries in Torrox Village which is a 6 minute drive from the house. Drive into the village following signs to Torrox-Pueblo and you ́ll find supermarkets on the main road driving into the village. It’s also possible to drive into the village by taking Calle Pontil (third exit on the first roundabout when driving from the house to Torrox). Follow Calle Pontíl and you’ll find a supermarket on your left. They generally open from 10 am to 2 or 2:30 pm, close until 5 pm and then open again until 20:00 or later every Monday to Saturday. Bakeries generally open from 8 am. These Minimarkets and bakeries/green grocers also open Sunday mornings from 9:00 am until 2 pm too. Please note: parking on the first main car park near the entrance to the village is free. Street parking requires a parking disc that most shops sell for 1 euro. There is a paid underground parking in the village too. Large supermarkets in Torrox: You’ll find larger supermarkets in Torrox Costa, about 10/15 minutes drive from the house. These supermarkets generally stay open all day from 9:00 or 9:30 am until 9:30 or 10 pm Monday to Saturday. Both Lidl and Aldi supermarkets are situated off the roundabout when you drive from Torrox (or the motorway) into Torrox Costa. To go to the other supermarkets, continue straight over this roundabout and on the second roundabout turn right onto the coast road (N340). All the supermarkets are on the right: La Plaza/Día : supermarket El Jamon : supermarket. Fruit and vegetables are not great here but the butcher is good! Mercadona : good all round supermarket with excellent fish selection Velez Malaga: El Engenio is the closest large shopping mall. Take the motorway direction Velez Malaga/Malaga and take the Velez Malaga/Torre del Mar exit (approximately 20 minutes by car) the mall is situated immediately on the left of the motorway. There is a good selection of fashion and other shops and there is a large Eroski supermarket. Souvenirs: Frigiliana has a couple of very nice artisan shops. The village is very pretty and so is the road that leads to it. When you come down from the house turn left instead of right (to Torrox). The road takes you to Frigiliana with fantastic views of the surrounding country side and the coast. Weekly Markets Please note that these weekly outside markets generally don’t sell fresh produce! Fresh produce is sold in the covered markets; Torrox Village has a very small covered market situated on the main square. Malaga has a fantastic large covered market in the city centre and Velez-Malaga has a smaller covered market as does Almuñecar. All markets only open in the mornings; 9 am to 2 pm. Mondays: Torrox Village, a small market with some fresh veg and fruit (on top of the car park) and Torrox Costa, a larger market (along the N340 coast road) Tuesdays: Nerja, fairly large but without much fresh produce Thursdays: Velez Malaga, Torre del Mar, Frigiliana BP Petrol station The BP Petrol station at the Torrox exit of the Motorway has most basic shopping and fresh bread. They open until 11 pm in summer.

Almuñecar is a beautiful old town on Spain's south coast. It's known for beaches like Velilla, San Cristobal and Del Mar. By the coast, San Miguel Castle is a centuries-old Arab fort. The Rocks of San Cristobal extend offshore. Subtropical plants fill El Majuelo Botanical Park, by the remains of a Roman fish-salting factory. In the vaults of an old Roman palace, the Archaeological Museum has Roman pottery and Egyptian artifacts. The historic centre is beautiful too and there are many lovely restaurant and bars on the pretty small plazas.

Walking/hiking

Around the white Andalusian village of Alcaucin lies one of the richest areas of flora and fauna of the Axarquía. Within the vegetation, the most characteristic feature is the pine forest, which in this case is of Aleppo and is repopulating. The most common tree species are poplars, cedars, oaks, and cypress. There are terebinth shrub species such as, gorse, jaguarzos, ivy thickets, and vines. Herbs such as thyme, rosemary, palmitos and torviscos can be found here as well. Closer to the "Senos de la Tejada", the pines are disappearing to make way for size shrub species such as juniper, savin, hawthorn, and yew, which is currently on the decline, although is teem on some cliffs on the north side of Sierra Tejada. The mountain goat is the most visible animal. The weasel, bobcat, badger, and genet live in these in the areas with the highest density of trees. Among the birds there are the linnet, blackbird, warbler, redstart, skylark and nightingale.

Canillas de Aceituno, Salares, Sedella, Canillas de Albaida, Archez, Competa, all villages which stand at the foot of the impressive Tejeda and Almijara Sierras; all morisco (Moorish convert to Christianity) villages, where vines were the main crop and are still an important element in the landscape as well as the economy; all display similar characteristics, reflecting the true essence of the Axarquia region, its scenery, its way of life and its history. The layout of their streets and the architecture of their whitewashed houses, which create unforgettably-picturesque corners, gives them a unique seal of identity, so much so that, together, they make up what is known as the Mudejar Route. For walkers there is the famous El Saltillo walk, a mini caminito del Rey.
