Local Attractions

This is one of the most popular local attractions (aside from the mountains themselves). It's located in Bretton Woods (Close to the cabin). Here you will ride to the top of Mount Washington on the World’s first mountain-climbing cog railway. An on-board guided tour provides a great narrative. On a clear day, you can see as far as Canada and the view is breathtaking! ** If you go to the top of Mt. Washington, always bring a jacket or something warm, even on a jot day. The tempature at the top is often drastically different and can be chilly even in the summer. Address: Base Station Road, 6 miles off Rt. 302 near historic Bretton Woods, Marshfield Station 03589 Phone: (603) 278-5404 Website: www.thecog.com

Very popular attraction (for a great reason). It is a 2-mile self-guided nature walk through the Flume Gorge, a spectacular natural chasm. Along the walk, you will discover covered bridges, amazing waterfalls, a scenic pool, and incredible mountain views. During the winter the visitor center closes and they remove walkways through the chasm, but you can still hike and watch the ice climbers. The hike itself is great for almost all ages. The inclines are gradual and the hiking paths are very wide and gravelled. You can book online to reserve a spot. Tickets are sold at the window counter if there are any spots left. Address: Route 3, Off I-93 Exit 34A, Lincoln, NH Website: https:// www. nhstateparks. org/visit/park-sites/flume-gorge ** In the winter, there is no charge to go in, but the walkway thru the Flume is closed, but you can still see the Flume and ice climbers and hike the 2 mile loop.

The Basin is a large granite pothole and waterfall that was created by a glacier more than 15,000 years ago. There are walking paths to the Basin (ten-minute walk), picnic tables and an entrance to Franconia Notch State Park. This is also a great site for hiking as well. 200 Weeks State Park Road, Lancaster 03584 https://www.nhstateparks.org/visit/state-parks/weeks-state-park On the summit of Mt. Prospect (it's a small mountain) in Lancaster is the summer estate of John Wingate Weeks, the U.S. Congressman who led the charge to establish the Weeks Act of 1911 to create our National Forest system. The mountain has open hiking trails. At the top (you can drive all the way to the top and park), there is Week's former home, a museum, and beautiful stone fire tower at the top (may not be opened at this time, I checked the website and it doesn't say either way, so maybe worth calling ahead if you want to go through the museum).

Great place for Ziplining in and above the trees! "This 3-hour excursion offers both a thrilling experience and an intimate look into the wilds of the White Mountains, with sweeping views of Mount Washington and the Presidential Range. The longest zip is about 830 ft. long and about 165 ft. high off the forest floor. Great Hiking Trails

Here are some of our favorite hikes. These are on the easier-moderate side.
Mt. Willard (Crawford Notch) (3.2 miles) Hart's Location, NH - (Easy/moderate) This is a popular (for a great reason), family-friendly hike. The views from the summit will leave you speechless. There is a panoramic view of Crawford Notch from above. On the right, you will see Mt Willey (4284') and on the left, you will see Mt Webster (3910'). Between the two is the deep glacial gorge that is the Crawford Notch. **The views of Crawford Notch are one of the best. I highly recommend this hike. It usually only takes 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete the hike (up and back).

Middle and North Sugarloaf Trailhead (one of my favorite hikes) Located off of Zealand Rd, Twin Mountain, NH - Sugarloaf is down the street from the cabin and a moderate hike. Park right before the bridge, there is a parking lot that fills up quickly (you can park on the street also), you will see a sign that says "Sugarloaf Trail". Take the trail right over the bridge and follow it. Make sure to turn left at the junction of Sugarloaf and Trestle Trail. (You will see signs on the trail: take a left and follow Sugarloaf. There is another split almost at the top. If you take a left, you head to Middle Sugarloaf, a right takes you to North Sugarloaf. They are both amazing, with amazing, but different views. If you are feeling up to it, you can do both. It only adds a little over a mile to the hike and is worth it! ** If you hike up to North Sugarloaf, make sure to find the additional trail to the right at the top. This trail takes you to a large clearing with sweeping views. ** Zealand Road is closed during the winter, so access to the trailhead via Rt 302 adds a few miles.

Zealand Trail, Jefferson, NH 03583 Also down the street from the cabin (near Sugarloaf Trailhead) This trail takes you on a relatively easy 2.8 mile trail through Zealand Notch to the Zealand Falls Hut. To find the trailhead, turn off Route 302 onto Zealand Road, and follow it to the very end. Along the way, you'll see the trailheads for Sugarloaf and the Hale Brook Trail. Continue to the end of the road, where a loop provides for some parking at the trailhead. You're may need to park alongside the road itself if the lot is full. * At 2.5 miles, you'll intersect with the Ethan Pond Trail and Twinway Trail. Turn right to continue to Zealand Falls Hut. The last 0.1 to 0.2 miles are a steep scramble up stone steps and boulders to reach the hut, but the view from the front porch of the hut is worth the climb.

ARETHUSA FALLS: Arethusa Falls is a great hike and if you want to add a little difficulty, take the Bemis Brook trail (forks to the left early on) is a great trail along the river with smaller falls. The last section before it meets back up with the Arethusa Falls Trail is very steep with lots of rocks and roots. **Arethusa Falls is my favorite Waterfall Hike. If you take the Bemi trail (splits to the left) it takes you by a lot of little waterfalls before a steep scramble to get back to main trail. If you skip the Bemis trail, the hike is much more easy/moderate. The waterfall is amazing. To get here: Continue east on RT 302 and, just after the Dry River Campground and the Willey House, park at the Arethusa Falls parking area on the right. Pull off the road to the right and drive up the big hill and park near the railroad tracks, if possible. If the parking lot on the hill is full, there is another one on your right when you pull off the road to go to Arethusa Falls. Cross the railroad tracks and go to the left of the wooden house. Be aware that the house is on private property, even though the trail runs close to it. Hike up the Arethusa Falls trail.

Mt. Pierce! Mt. Pierce via Crawford Path - This is a longer but more moderate hike (inclines are gradual for a 4000+ footer). Driving Directions: Trailhead and parking area are on Mt. Clinton Road in Bretton Woods, NH. Mt. Clinton Road leaves Rt. 302 8.2 miles east of Rt. 3. The parking area is on the left, less than 0.1 miles up the road. Mt. Pierce is a peak in the Southern Presidentials which is considered one of the easiest 4000-footers to climb and a really enjoyable, great hike. From a small alpine area near its summit, there is a great view of the Southern Presidentials to Mt. Washington. From the far end of the parking area, follow Crawford Connecter into the woods and soon cross Mt. Clinton Road. The trail begins to ascend on the other side, climbing to a wooden bridge over Gibbs Brook. Pass Crawford Cliff Spur on the left just before the bridge and turn left onto Crawford Path just after it. The trail now joins the brook and climbs more steeply alongside it; in 0.2 miles, a spur leads down to Gibbs Falls, a narrow, angled waterfall. At its base is a wide and shallow pool. The trail continues to climb moderately up the mountainside over rocky terrain for a mile before the environment changes. Then, the forest around the trail becomes lush and mossy. The trail soon passes Mizpah Cutoff on the right and the grade lessens. After another mile of climbing, the trail becomes gravelly and enters the alpine zone. Trailside views begin to appear, and the trail then reaches the junction with Webster Cliff Trail. Turn right and climb 0.1 miles into the grassy alpine area. The true summit, marked by a cairn, is a short distance further on the trail. Views are spectacular. The Mt. Washington Resort can be seen in the valley below to the west ** If you don't feel like hiking a mountain and wanted to do a Nature Walk (Flat Terrain), one of the places I love going to is The Pondicherry Rail Trail. Pondicherry is a wildlife preserve with a trail that runs through it for bikers and walkers/runners. It has great views of the Presidentials and is a really beautiful spot. There is an observation deck that is one of my favorites to visit. It overlooks the pond and you can see the mountains in the distance. Trailhead address: Presidential Rail Trail, 289 Airport Road, Whitefield, NH 03598 Here are some restaurant recommendations I put together (Based on atmosphere):

It has great views of the Presidentials from the observation deck and is a really beautiful spot in all 4 seasons. The observation deck that is one of my favorites to visit. It overlooks the pond and you can see the Presidential Mountain Range in the distance. Trailhead address: Presidential Rail Trail, 289 Airport Road, Whitefield, NH 03598

A ¾ mile boardwalk is your path through the gorge. Your journey can be as easy or as ambitious as you choose: you may remain on the boardwalk, or accept the challenge of exploring the boulder caves. Sturdy footwear and outdoor clothing are recommended and no strollers are allowed in the gorge. https://lostrivergorge.com/

https://www.nhstateparks.org/visit/state-parks/franconia-notch-state-park located in the heart of the White Mountain National Forest. Franconia Notch is a spectacular mountain pass traversed by a unique parkway which extends from the Flume Gorge at the south to Echo Lake at the north. For eight miles, I-93 winds between the high peaks of the Kinsman and Franconia mountain ranges. Franconia Notch was the home of the famous Old Man of the Mountain, the same "Great Stone Face" immortalized by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Daniel Webster. While you are here, stop at the Flume Gorge Visitor Center and walk through the renowned Flume Gorge, ride the exciting aerial tramway at Cannon Mountain, and visit the New England Ski Museum. Take your time, stop for a swim at Echo Lake, net a trout while fly fishing at Profile Lake, ride your bike on the Recreational Trail, watch for rock climbers, hawks, and falcons on Cannon Cliffs, or hike on the Appalachian Trail. Bring the family, stay awhile, and enjoy Franconia Notch State Park.

The Mount Washington Hotel is right down the street from the cabin and a beautiful and historic place to visit and the resort has so many activities you can book (you do not have to be a guest at the hotel to visit the hotel or book their activities). When I have visitors, I take them to see the lobby and walk through the hotel. It's so amazing on a nice day and early evening to sit on the veranda with a full view of Mt. Washington and have a drink. Definitely, a place to walk through and experience. Also, there is a scenic pull-off across the street that is such a perfect place to take pictures of Mount Washington with the historical and iconic hotel in the background. There are also several restaurants in the hotel you can dine at. Activities you can book through the resort are: Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sleigh rides, ice skating, mountain biking, ziplining, tubing, etc. https://www.omnihotels.com/hotels/bretton-woods-mount-washington/things-to-do

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING - The Spruce Goose and Flat Iron Cross Country Ski Trails off of Zealand Rd (down the street from the cabin) In the winter, the road is closed, so you will have to ski/snowshoe up the road to the trails. You can park 1/4 mile down the road. There is a tunnel that will take you to the other side of Rt 302 if you do not want to cross Rt 302. http://www.ohranger.com/white-mountain-natl-forest/poi/zealand-valley-ski-trails "The Spruce Goose and Flat Iron Cross Country Ski Trails in the Zealand Valley are not groomed and there is no user fee. Snowshoers and hikers are asked to stay to the west side of the Spruce Goose Trail. Spruce Goose is 4.1 miles long and classified most difficult for the first half mile and more difficult thereafter. Flat Iron is a 1.3 mile loop trail, and classified easiest because it neither gains nor loses much elevation. Access: Both trails start at Zealand Campground on Route 302 in Twin Mountain, NH. The campground is 3 miles east of the junction of Route 302 and Route 3. Free parking for both cross country skiers and snowmobilers is available in the Zealand parking area, located 1/4 mile east of Zealand Campground. Parking is not permitted elsewhere along Route 302, Zealand Road, or in the campground areas. Flat Iron Cross Country Ski Trail - (Marked for ONE WAY travel): From the west side of the Zealand Road, a few hundred feet beyond the bridge over the Ammonoosuc River, the Flat Iron Trail enters the woods on the right onto an old road. After about 30 yards the trail bears left to descend slightly into the first of two maintained wildlife openings. It enters the woods again and at 0.3 mile begins to follow the bank of the Zealand River. It leaves the river at 0.7 mile, ascending a short bank onto an old road once again. Following the old road 0.6 mile, it loops back to where the trail begins. The old road, located on a glacial ridge, was built between 1903 and 1904 and connected the Twin Mountain house in Twin Mountain to the Fabyan House near Bretton Woods. Spruce Goose Cross Country Ski Trail - (Marked with blue diamonds for TWO WAY travel): The Spruce Goose Trail enters the woods on the right about 50 feet beyond the Flat Iron Trail. It begins at 1500 feet elevation and rises to 2100 feet at its intersection with the southern end of the Zealand Road."

Swimming Holes

LOWER AMMONOOSUC FALLS (Very close to the cabin, 7-8 mins away): A small cascading falls in the Ammonoosuc River that turn into a very large pool making it a nice family swimming place. This is one of our favorite places to go. Just be careful when walking into the water, the rock bottom can be a bit slippery. Directions to Lower Ammonoosuc Falls from the cabin: Take a left onto Rt. 302 to Old Cherry Mountain Rd. Take an immediate left onto Lower Falls Rd. Go to the end of the road to the parking lot. Follow the dirt road beyond the gate at the end of the parking lot .2 mile. Walk about 5 minutes down the gravel road to the small falls and huge pool. This is a popular area so there may (probably will) be others there as well.
