Dave’s Top Picks - Fort Myers Beach and Bonita Springs

Coconut Jack's Waterfront Grille is an award-winning waterfront restaurant just strides away from Bonita Beach overlooking the Back Bay.

Rating: 4 - ‎820 reviews - ‎Price range: $11-30 Mahi Tacos, Fish Tacos, Grouper Sandwich, Stuffed Grouper, King Crab Legs, Fried Grouper Basket, Shrimp Basket, Scallop Basket. ... Favorite place in Bonita Springs and one of the top restaurants in the area as far as I am concerned......
Fashioned after a classic Florida fish house, this favorite Fort Myers Beach restaurant, which began life in 1937 as a market selling mullet, snapper, clams, and oysters, has a stunning view of Matanzas Harbor. It’s not just waterfront dining—the restaurant patio actually sits out over the water. Grab a spot outside on the extensive dock and sup on the “pink gold,” the nickname that was given to the local fresh shrimp that are as plentiful as sunsets. You can also choose among a selection of freshly caught fish including grouper, mahi-mahi, snapper, and other Gulf fish. With a tin roof and no windows, this open-air restaurant has weathered hurricane winds, tidal surges, and more. The Dixie Fish Co. also offers live music most evenings.

This must-see among Fort Myers attractions is a refuge for these gentle sea cows, a spot where you can paddle among manatees and observe them in their natural environment. But there’s a caveat: They have to choose to be in the area. And, of course, because this is a non-captive environment, there’s also no guarantee you’ll see them. Your best chances for seeing families of manatees here are when the temperatures drop during the winter months when the water gets colder in the gulf and stays warmer in these shallower waters. Rent watercraft from the onsite outfitter, Calusa Blueway Outfitters & Gift Shop. The staff offers educational programs, including how to approach and leave manatee areas, plus fish and butterfly identification tips. Other park features include fishing opportunities, playgrounds, picnic areas, restrooms, walking paths, and a butterfly garden with native plants that serve as a model program for others.

Sanibel Island Located along the Gulf of Mexico, just a short drive from Fort Myers, Sanibel Island is justly famed for its sunsets, lighthouse and luxurious resorts. By far, the most popular activity on Sanibel Island is shelling – you barely can walk a step on the beach without indulging in the so-called "Sanibel Stoop" to search for shells. But there is so much else to do on Sanibel Island – fine accommodations, luscious dining (seafood, of course!), fishing, boating, and just plain relaxation, a chance to get away from the hurly burly, a chance to draw closer to nature.
Learn about the surprising entrepreneurial history of Fort Myers at these side-by-side estates, where inventors Thomas A. Edison and Henry Ford spent their winters inventing, gallivanting, and socializing. Today, the historic buildings have been preserved and include Edison’s Botanic Research Laboratory and the Edison Ford Museum. Take specialty tours (inventions, antique cars), or explore 20 acres of botanical gardens that include Edison’s thousands of experimental research plants and the family’s fruit trees. Grab a bite at Pinchers at The Marina at Edison Ford; or sign up for an art or gardening workshop. After you leave, be sure to drive down majestic McGregor Boulevard. Formerly a road for cattle driving, it’s now a wonderfully scenic two-lane street planted on both sides with Royal Palms.
