Restaurants

Staying at 115 puts you within easy reach of a range of restaurants to cater for every preference. Port en Bessin is a short walk away and offers everything from Pizzas through to some fantastic sea food restaurants. Fine dining is available at the nearby Chateau de Chenevrie. A 10 minus drive puts you in Bayeux, once again with a range of great restaurants to suit every taste.
Fine food and a great range of fixed price menus as well as the very best seafood in the Port. you'll need to book in advance though!

Reliable, informal and great for a family dinner or lunch. Splendid location on the quayside and a place we go back to visit after visit.

My favourite for a Pizza and beer .... and Crepe Normand! Good value and service and popular with families. Quite small so can get busy.

The D-Day tour

115 sits on the fields where US and British forces met on the 7th June. It's therefore no surprise that we are perfectly positioned to see the astonishing history of D-Day. Port en Bessin has its own liberation history being liberated by British commando's on 7th June. A very short drive away in one direction gets you to the haunting Omaha Beach whilst go the other way and you get to Arromanches and the Mulberry Harbour. All of the D-Day beaches and sites from Utah, St Mere Eglise through to Gold, Juno, Sword and Pegasus Bridge are within very easy reach. But, explore wider and there is evenmore to see; as a keen military historian I am more than happy to advise on what to see, how long you'll need and where to go if you are keen to explore the Normandy Campaign 'off the beaten track'.
No D-day trip would be complete without a visit to the haunting Omaha Beach. Best earlier and later in the day when the coach parties have gone and you get to appreciate even more the scale of the endeavour and the sacrifices made on that fateful day.

Though every D-Day site is significant and poignant, Pegasus Bridge epitomise the courage of those who flew into the unknown in the early hours of 6th June. If you get the chance, take in a visit to the nearby Merville Battery too. The museums at both are well worth the trip.

This is a jewel in the overcrowded tourist traps of Pointe du Hoc and Omaha Beach. An uncovered German battery and trench system lovingly restored but maintaining an authentic feel. Don’t expect glitz but for me this is a touch of the reality of 1944 Normandy.

Stretching your legs

Further afield you can take a longish day out and drive to some memorable places further afield. The obvious are Mont St Michel and, for a long day, Monet's Garden.
A must see if you have the time. No need for long descriptions but the 'galloping' tide really is impressive. Spectacular views from the top but our only warning is around timing - it can get unpleasantly busy in peak season and once the coach tours have arrived.

A day in Bayeux

You can easily spend a full day in Bayeux ... and you probably should! The Tapestry is of course world-famous but take some time to walk around the medieval streets close to the Cathedral. The town was liberated soon after D-Day and so was spared the destruction that befell Caen and St Lo. As such it remains charming, quirky and very French! If you are inclined, get up early on a Saturday and visit the market. A proper French market selling everything from furniture to fresh fish.
So, you've walked and walked and have earned that coffee-stop. This is an amazing coffee and pastries shopped that is so French. Personally i'd go for the Hot Chocolate and eclairs but ....... so much to choose from!
