The Siena Academy of Sciences, known as Accademia dei Fisiocritici, is one of the oldest scientific institutions in Italy. In the eighteenth century it had enormous prestige in cultural circles all over Europe, and major intellectuals of the time among its members. Founded for the purpose of studying the truth of natural phenomena, more than three centuries later it continues its mission of scientific communication through museum teaching, publication of journals, and activities and events open to the public. Today the Accademia is a true cultural space, hosting and organising concerts, theatre, art exhibitions, children’s animation and many other initiatives.

Built as a hospice for pilgrims travelling the Via Francigena, this huge complex opposite the Duomo dates from the 13th century. Its highlight is the upstairs Pellegrinaio (Pilgrim's Hall), featuring vivid 15th-century frescoes by Lorenzo di Pietro (aka Vecchietta), Priamo della Quercia and Domenico di Bartolo. All laud the good works of the hospital and its patrons; the most evocative is di Bartolo's Il governo degli infermi (Caring for the Sick; 1440–41), which depicts many activities that occurred here.

St Catherine was welcomed into the Dominican fold within this huge and austere 13th-century basilica. Inside, the Cappella di Santa Caterina (halfway down the wall to the right of the altar) contains frescoes by Il Sodoma and Andrea Vanni depicting events in the saint's life. Also here are 15th-century reliquaries containing Catherine's head and one of her fingers, as well as a nasty-looking chain that she is said to have flagellated herself with.

Santa Maria in Provenzano, or the Insigne Collegiata di Santa Maria in Provenzano, is a late-Renaissance-Baroque style, Roman Catholic, collegiate church in Piazza Provenzano Salvani, in the Terza Camollia, just southwest of the basilica of San Francesco, in the city of Siena, region of Tuscany, Italy. This Marian shrine was built around a 14th-century terracotta icon of the Madonna, which was credited with miracles. The Palio of Siena takes place on the day of veneration of this Marian devotion.

Built to demonstrate the enormous wealth, proud independence and secular nature of Siena, this 14th-century Gothic masterpiece is the visual focal point of the Campo, itself the true heart of the city. Architecturally clever (notice how its concave facade mirrors the opposing convex curve) it has always housed the city's administration and been used as a cultural venue. Its distinctive bell tower, the Torre del Mangia, provides magnificent views to those who brave the steep climb to the top.

St Catherine once lived here with her parents and 24 siblings (locals joke her mother must have been a saint too). Now a pilgrimage site overseen by nuns of the Benedictine order, the home's original kitchen and sleeping area were frescoed and converted into chapels in the 15th century. The larger Chiesa del Crocifisso (closed between 12.30pm and 3pm) was added in the 17th century. The downstairs Orotorio della Camera includes the saint's untouched, nearly bare cell.

Serenely beautiful, this Romanesque church was built in the 10th century and used by the Knights Templar in the 12th century. It then passed to the Knights of Malta after the Templar order was dissolved. The current facade dates from the 13th century. The dimly lit interior is austere, with a 15th-century crucifix being one of the few adornments. To the church's immediate south are hospice buildings where pilgrims on the Via Francigena once rested.

Housed in the Renaissance-era Palazzo Piccolomini, Siena's state archives aren't a usual stop on the standard tourist itinerary, but provide ample reward for those who choose to visit. The small on-site museum takes its name from the pride of the archive's collection: 103 small late-13th-century painted and gilded wooden panels known as the 'Tavolette di Biccherna'. The building, previously a Camaldolese monastery, houses two centuries of acquisitions and donations. Collections of natural and historical specimens, period instruments and curiosities are displayed in nineteenth century style.
