A day at the lake.
Easy access. Spot to unload car. Plenty of parking. Bring a float or fishing rd. If you are a good swimmer you can swim across the lake and back. Decent amateur kayaking. Great people. Plenty of places to set up camp. Bring a blanket and a cooler and hang. No rifraf. Great for kids, nice shallow area leading into the lake. Drive to Phoenicia via Wittenberg Rd / Old Plank Rd, have breakfast at Sweet Sue’s (world famous pancakes, ask for Cathy, the waitress, tell her Thirza sent you), go early, they get busy after 10:30am, then take 214 through the notch all the way to the end, make a right and head to Tannersville, at the first light in Tannersville make a left, (scenic byway], turn right onto Colgate Lake Rd. Have a beer afterwards at The Last Chance in Tannersville. Sit at the bar, Samantha will take care of you. I get fondue for 2. Wonderful family restaurant/antique store. Afterwards, take 23A To Palenville, catch views of the falls along the way. Stop at the Circle W deli for a non alcoholic end to the day or to pick up sandwiches. They have a cute gift shop. From there, you can take Woodstock Way Rd to West Saugerties Rd, to Glasgo, to Rock City Rd then right back in town. This is really my favorite place to swim. 40 min from house and well worth the drive. Super clean water, encircled by the mountains. Plan to stay the day. Plenty of nice grassy areas to throw down a blanket and chill. There really are no more local swimming holes of note around here. Most local holes filled in after Irene and property owners have really come down hard on making them accessible. You will be close to Katerskill falls viewing pavillion, off of the North/South Lake access rd, and you can certainly include that in the mix after your swim time.

There are great spots to swim on the Esopus. Get friendly with a fisherman and he’ll clue you in. Hands down the best water around.

I went here with a friend the day after my father died. What an amazing place, so worth the drive! She is 65 and shared with me her memories of driving there practically daily from Mt Tremper. Awesome for kayak. Can’t wait to go back with my fishing pole! Easy drop in points and nice parking convenient to swimming and no masses...

On the way sort of to Big Pond...pass by the trout hatchery and buy a trout! Too much geese poop on the shore for me to spread a blanket but mega old ruin of an estate way better that Overlook Mtn house...There is a trail that goes all the way around the lake, which I did not do...lazy now....but that is probably where it is at. Definitely great place to fish! Kayakfor sure, but you need wheels to get it down there. Kinda makes me want to kayak!

Nice place to take a quick swim or better yet to kayak (easy unloading close to the lake). Trails also that somewhat circle the lake, good for running. There are snakes and goo so I don’t swim there. I am of course spoiled by all the better, mostly illegal these days, swimming around. Off of Rt 28, on left heading East towards Kingston across from Harley Davidson. There will be some road noise due to the proximity of Rt 28 but nonetheless easy access and nice clean water. Drive all the way in beyond the gate and that will lead you to lakeside parking. Wear aqua shoes. If that parking is full, then turn around and park in the lot on Rt 28 before the gate. You can pick up delicious sandwiches at Bistro to Go, yummy gourmet cheese at Cheese Louise, and wine at the Wine Hutch; all 3 stores just a couple of doors down heading back to Woodstock on Rt 28.

Never been there. You tell me. Must get permit online so should be less people. Friend’s favorite.
