This square is at the heart of Geneva's Old Town near to St. Peter's Cathedral, above the modern city, it is Geneva's oldest square. The square is surrounded by cafes, bars and restaurants, some with outside seating areas. The square seems to have been constructed originally at the location of the ancient Roman forum. The remains of Roman roads leading south to Annecy and Lyon and east to Italy were found beneath the square. Then in the 9th century it became a medieval market place.
