Great place to stop for a quick bite. Breakfast, lunch or a late afternoon snack. Most famous Hawaiian sweet bread is made right here! Delicious made to order sandwiches, salads, smoothies, pastries and ice creams. I recommend my number one favorite, their Lilikoi(passion fruit) malasada.

Outdoor Sightseeing

Day exploration suggestions. The best of the best, HAVE to see sites while you're here!
If you want to see honu, aka sea turtles, sitting on the beach, this one is a good bet. You’ll get to see one of the famous volcanic black sand beaches of Hawaii and turtles in one go, if you’re lucky enough. While I wouldn’t call it a great swimming beach, there is a lifeguard on duty, and you might spot the turtles if you take a snorkel out. They also like to sunbathe right on the beach. Just make sure to keep a fair distance away from them for their sake. Go ahead and lounge under the big coconut trees and chillax. Also, please note that you cannot take any black sand home with you. This applies to the green sand beach as well!

The perfect place to Snorkel. Beautiful reef with colorful corals and fish to see. The locals call it two step, as you’ll see you’ll just park grab your snorkel gear and jump in the water right their!! Theres a few picnic benches that you can rest and and have a nice picnic lunch if you decide to. Or toast yourself out on the nice pahoehoe lava rocks.

The newest most recent black sand beach made. Created by the most famous Fissure 8 Lava eruption. Not a place to swim as the open ocean here is very rough and unpredictable.

A local favorite, to have some fun in the sun. Crystal blue brackish water, where the warm ocean salt water mixes with the fresh spring water. Great place to swim, snorkel, bask in the sun and picnic. Watch huge honus(turtles) cruz a long side you as you play in the water.

Although the park is still recovering from our most recent lava flow and not all trails and roads have reopened. Theirs still a handful of things to sight see. For example the Kīlauea Iki hike which takes you down and across the crater floor. Along with the steam vents and sulfur banks just to name a few :)

When driving around the north side of the island on the way to Hilo from Kona, you’ll find the glorious ‘Akaka Falls. This waterfall is a huge payoff for just a short walk down a trail from the parking lot, so don’t miss out on this one. ‘Akaka Falls is a whopping 442 feet tall! The full hike around the loop is 0.4 miles, so it’s appropriate for most skill levels, though some of it is stairs and uphill. On the hike, you’ll also see the 100 foot tall Kahuna Falls and lots of lush rainforest.

Did you know there are only four other green sand beaches in the world? Papakolea Beach is a bit of a trek, but still arguably the easiest of the green sand beaches to get to for most people (the others are in the Galapagos, Guam, and Norway). From the parking area, the beach is a 5.5 mile roundtrip, mostly flat trail. There are also 4WD roads out to the beach. You won’t be able to take your rental car out there, but oftentimes locals wait around with 4WD trucks in the parking lot and you can pay them for a ride to the beach. It’ll save you the hike!

Back in the north of the island, Waipio Valley is filled with lush greenery and a secluded black sand beach. There are multiple ways to see Waipio. 1) There is an overlook in the parking lot. If you’re content with a viewpoint overlooking it all, this is a great quick road trip stop as you make your way between Kona and Hilo via the north. 2) You can also book a tour that will take you to the bottom and back by 4WD. 3) Try exploring Waipio Valley by horseback! Multiple tour companies offer this as a unique way to see the valley and beach.

Fun fact: Mauna Kea is actually the tallest mountain in the world - most of it is just under the ocean! For the part above land, its peak is still 13,803 ft above sea level, making it the tallest point in Hawaii. That’s why it’s home to several telescopes, and what makes it the perfect spot for stargazing tours. When you’re up top, you can spend your time at the visitor center, see the observatories, and watch the sunset. The summit of Mauna Kea is one of the best spots in the world to watch the sunset.

Whale watching season in Hawaii is from November to April, so if you’re there the right time of year, this is a must-do. While oftentimes you can see the humpback whales right from the beach, the best way to see them up close is to book a whale watching tour. From the Kona coast, you can book anything from a private boat to a catamaran tour. Most will run from $50-$100 and will take you out for a few hours. If you’re lucky, you’ll get some big whale action, like tail slapping and breaching. They sometimes even come right up to your boat!
