Our neighbourhood

Sarrià is a neighbourhood in the city of Barcelona, although it was not always like that. Until 1921, it was an independent municipality of the City of Barcelona, date in which, despite protests from its inhabitants, it began to be part of Barcelona. The first information known about Sarrià go back to the 10th century. Initially this town, was dedicated to the agricultural sector, especially to the production of wine. Years later, and due to the special weather of the town (its proximity to the park of Collserola and Tibidabo), many wealthy families from the nearby city of Barcelona, began to install their palaces and build modernist houses here for their vacations. These buildings intended to imitate what was known about the architecture in Paris: spectacular modernist palaces and a large landscaped avenue that culminated in a spectacular church: Temple of the Sacred Heart, which is a kind of a copy of the Sacre Coeur in Paris. On the way to Tibidabo, taking the Tramvia Blau, we can relive this time. The best example without doubt is the Bellesguard Tower. Over the years these homes stopped being used for just holidays and became the usual home of these people. At the same time and in contrast to those spectacular mansions and palaces, the old town of Sarrià still retains its village aspect: narrow streets and small squares, surrounded by gardens, being also the gateway to the great natural park of Collserola. There are hundreds of small places to discover in this old town: the Sant Gaietá Quarter, the old cemetery, and the best place to eat patatas bravas: Bar el Tomàs.

Lugares emblemáticos

The Royal Monastery of St Mary of Pedralbes, is one of the finest examples of Catalan Gothic in Barcelona. The building from the early 14th century shows the everyday life of nuns. Religious art from the 14th to the 20th century is displayed in the monastery museum. Highlights are the three-storey cloister and the gardens inside the monastery. The monastery certainly wouldn’t be as beautiful and impressive without its gardens in the courtyard. You won’t find a quieter place in all Barcelona – except for the birds singing in the trees and the gurgling of the Renaissance fountain in the centre of the courtyard you won’t hear a sound. Large palm trees and cypresses provide cool shade. From the lower cloister, there are several ways to the gardens. Free Entrance: Sunday from 15:00hs and first Sunday of the month. Location: Baixada del Monestir 9, Barcelona. Only a few stops with the bus H4 from the house.

The Bellesguard house was built by Antoni Gaudí between 1900 and 1909, using rectilinear forms rarely seen in his other work. His inspiration was the medieval castle of Martin I, also known as Martin the Humane, the last king of the Catalan dynasty of the House of Barcelona, who resided at Bellesguard until his death in 1410. Gaudí built a castle that was a blend of Art Nouveau and Gothic style and restored the ruins of the medieval palace, which are now part of the estate’s grounds. The history of Bellesguard is inextricably bound up with the history of Catalonia. The many historic events that unfolded and the renowned figures that passed through Bellesguard over the centuries influenced and inspired Antoni Gaudí to create one of his most personal, symbolic and fascinating works. Without queues and crowds. Come and discover it!

Ever get tired of the hustle and bustle of the busy Barcelona life? Or feel like you need a breath of fresh air? It’s easy to forget just how easy it actually is to get away from all of the city life commotion. Only a metro ride away from the center is the Collserola Natural Park, which also just so happens to be the biggest metropolitan park in the world and engulfs the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi neighborhoods of Vallvidrera, Tibidabo, and Les Planes. One of its most accessible points is the Carretera de Les Aigües, the pine-laden 10 km ‘water road’ that is perfect for going on runs, bike rides, or even just nice long walks. Take the funicular from Peu del Funicular and get ready to take in some spectacular, crowd-free, views of the city.

(Not for visiting now, it is the Mexico embassy, just to see from outside) Muley Afid was Caliph of Marrakech and the son of Sultan Hassan I. He later became sultan too, but only for four years. Placa Sant Vicenc is bursting with character. Whether you want upmarket oysters and expensive wines or you’d prefer the atmospheric café where writers Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Mario Vargas Llosa enjoyed a vino whilst scribbling, this is a very pleasant plaza with beautiful examples of town houses.

Important park

The l’Oreneta Park is on one of the slopes of the Collserola mountain range. The name of the L’Oreneta Park (which is actually the Castell de l’Oreneta Park) comes from an old farmhouse that was called that way in this area. The whole park is about 17 hectares. Seventeen acres with an incredible sample of Mediterranean vegetation, fruit trees, and numerous aromatic herbs. Including the majestic eucalyptus or the cherry tree, both cataloged as trees of special interest. From here you can go to the Road of les Aigües, ideal place to practice sports. Along its dirt paths you will find areas equipped for the game, a small steam train that runs over 600 meters inside the park. An urban park with spectacular views of the city, there is a viewpoint where you can see one of the best views of Barcelona. Nothing has to envy other lookouts like the Turó de la Peira, the Turó de Rovira, Montjuic or Parc Güell. Free Entrance: Everyday Location: Carrer de Montevideo 45, Barcelona

When you pass through the gate into the Jardins de La Tamarita, you enter a Barcelona that takes you back to a time when the bourgeoisie were building themselves mansions surrounded by gardens in the upper part of the city. These gardens are a good place for a rest and some peace and quiet, far from the madding crowd, on the other side of the stone and wrought-iron wall that surrounds the gardens, built to safeguard a space that was once private and which is now public. The gardens of the Villa Amelia form an almost perfect square. The green design of traditional French style is the result of a merger between the original species of a former private gardens and plantations later introduced when they remodeled to make them public. The presence of towering trees of species varied highlights the quality of a garden where trees are preserved as palms, bananas or pins and a variety of shrubs and flowerbeds. history The Gardens of the Villa Amelia originate in the sumptuous garden that Ignasi Girona had built a farm on his property Sarria. The name put in honor of his wife, Amelia de Vilanova. For many years, the Girona family used the Quinta Amelia as a summer resort. In 1930 the City Council to allocate land for a public park, and in 1969 was finally expropriated in exchange for building one part, which led to the overthrow of the former residence of Girona. A piece of land has been integrated into the neighboring gardens of the Villa Cecilia, located across the street from Santa Amelia, which opened when they created two green spaces.

Restaurants that we like, food stores and supermarkets

Sarrià also has its own neighbourhood market, down the street from the Pedralbes Monastery, which is probably much more authentic than any of the others you are likely to find downtown. Sarrià Market has become a modern, spacious showcase for food which reopened in 2007 after a complete refit. It still retains the original structure of the market founded over 100 years ago which supplied the local community with food throughout the last century and continues to do so today.
