Since it opened in 1949, Gatorland has welcomed millions of guests through its famous gates to see the thousands of alligators, crocodiles, and other reptiles on display, some of which perform in daily shows and demonstrations. While paying a visit to Disney Springs (formerly Downtown Disney before a major rebrand and facelift) is undoubtedly one of the top free things to do in Orlando, it can easily turn out to be an expensive diversion from the theme parks. Why? Well, while this exquisitely designed entertainment, dining, and shopping district is free to wander, the temptations to dive into the purse or reach for the wallet are plentiful.

Situated in the heart of downtown Orlando, Lake Eola Park is a must-do for those wanting to experience just a little of what this dynamic city has to offer outside of the theme parks. Originating as a sinkhole before being landscaped and turned into a public park in 1888, it's a surprisingly large green space, with plenty of fun things to do.

Husband-and-wife duo, James and Julie Petrakis both grew up in Winter Park, Florida and met while studying at the acclaimed Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. Collectively, their resumes including working in kitchens spanning from New York City to Atlanta. It was during this time where they gained a strong appreciation for local and sustainable ingredients. Neighborhoods

Though perhaps best known for the commercial stretch of SR 436 that runs through it like a great river of multi-generational strip malls, Altamonte Springs is also home to one of Orlando's most popular shopping centers, a beautiful lake-set park and something of a "Where's Waldo?" of hidden dining gems.

From 1940 to 1968, this trendy neighborhood served as an Army Air Corps and Air Force base and later as the Orlando Naval Training Center, sort of a college campus for sailors. Today, it has been completely renovated and is home to thousand of residents. Our favorite result of the transformation: Fifty miles of paths and trails and 200 acres of parks.

Act fast and you may still find a real estate bargain in quaint College Park, where many bungalow-lined streets (Harvard, Yale, Vassar, etc.) are named for famed institutions of higher learning. Ground zero for shopping, dining and nightlife is the intersection of Princeton and Edgewater – CP’s de facto “Main Street.”

Formerly known as "Antiques Row," Ivanhoe Village is – for now, anyway – still a name you can drop and hear some locals ask, "Where's that?" Its monthly "First Friday" event brings musicians to out the sidewalks as revelers stroll from shop to cafe, enjoying specials along with the sense of community.

Every city should have an alcove like Loch Haven where community involvement and savoir-faire reign supreme. There’s so much to do in this area, especially if you like art. You could say that Loch Haven Park is the cultural corridor of Orlando. Nestled within this tranquil green space are some of the organizations that make up the heart of Orlando’s cultural scene. Plus, the area plays host to a selection of events including the Festival of Trees, Antiques Show and Sale, Orlando International Fringe Festival, PlayFest, Pet Fair and VegFest

Things to Do

Orlando's SeaWorld is known for its massive aquariums, dolphin and whale shows, touch pools, and many exciting rides. Although guests may no longer feed the dolphins, you are still able to reach into the interactive dolphin pool and pet these beautiful, intelligent creatures.

Consisting of three individual parks, Universal Orlando Resort has in recent years certainly upped its game as a challenger to Disney's theme park supremacy. The addition of new rides and attractions within each of the parks – Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and Volcano Bay – has certainly helped, and these days you can easily spend as much time exploring Universal's rich world of characters as you can Disney's.

By Car (Recommended)

The easiest and most convenient way to get around Orlando is by car as many of the city’s top attractions are spread out and require multiple transfers on public transportation. If you plan on driving, be sure to keep some cash on hand for tolls and consider investing in a good map (free area maps provided by attractions are not the most reliable) or bring a GPS with you.

By I-Ride Trolley in the International Drive Area

If you plan to stay in the International Drive, also called I-Drive, area, consider purchasing a pass for the I-Ride Trolley which services lots of attractions in the I-Drive area including SeaWorld, Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and more. Single rides are available but require exact change.

By Bus

LYNX, Orlando’s comprehensive bus system can get visitors to most areas in Orlando and beyond but can be a hassle when it comes to trip planning and bus schedules. LYNX bus stops are marked with a pink bus or paw print sign and run ever 15, 30, or 60 minutes depending on the route. Check their site for schedules and route maps.

By Taxi or Ride Share

Taxis are typically available at major attractions and most hotels however; most visitors find that renting a car is less expensive than relying on taxis. You might also opt to use a ride share service like Lyft or Uber if you're only trying to get between a few places (or if you're going out for the evening and don't want to drive).
