Best fine dining steakhouse in central Texas. Reservations recommended, but sometimes you can get a seat at the bar if you don’t have a res. Sides are family-style and quite large so plan to split. The corso salad, creamed spinach, and lobster bisque are especially delicious. Steaks are perfectly cooked to order. Sitting in the bar area is much more entertaining, but the tables are high-tops. Extensive wine and cocktail menu.

Very close to our Guest House, Carney's is an inexpensive local favorite for a large variety of beers and ciders on tap, as well as a fully stocked bar, the best cheese fries anywhere, great burgers, and pub fare. The vibe is a very laid back dive bar with great music, pool tables and shuffleboard. Everyone is welcome, so you'll see a mix of college students and locals, but usually more locals than students. They have dog-friendly patios in front and back. Servers are very friendly and always happy to make recommendations based upon your preferences.

Great place for weekend brunch. Expect a long wait to sit in the diner, but enjoy mimosas or micheladas and limited menu items in the outdoor seating area. Biscuits and gravy or breakfast sandwiches are delicious. The lunch and dinner menus are also great. Dog friendly porch & deck. Check online for hours and menu items. They have been updating their hours and menus frequently.

Our favorite wing joint of all time. Bone-in, boneless, and tenders are all great options. The draft beer is served in a frozen mug. Friendly service and great wings. Start with cheese fries. There is frequently a wait—try getting on the Yelp waitlist before you head over. Outdoor dining available.

Ronin is a local family business, and reservations are recommended, but if you are a small group and willing to wait a little while, they will always fit you in. . . we enjoy sitting at the bar where we can see into the open kitchen. The bar also offers a full dining menu. They specialize in modern farm food made from ingredients harvested from the owners’ family farm and other local farms. Everything is seasonal and very fresh. The owners, Amanda and Brian, have been on-site, wife at the bar and husband in the kitchen, every time we have been there. Seating options include a large dining room, the bar area, and an outdoor porch. They have the best chicken fried steak you have ever tasted. This is a perfect spot for date night or Sunday brunch.

Weird name, weird location, fantastic creole and cajun food. Everything they cook is amazing and authentic (my husband and I lived in Louisiana for eight years). It is a super casual environment, with many of the items served in styrofoam containers or lined plastic baskets, but every bite is worth it. Take cash if you can; they charge extra for credit cards. They are very friendly. Be prepared to be called “hon” or “darlin”. The owner, Korey, is a refugee from Hurricane Katrina, and is usually on site supervising the cooking and mingling with the guests.

Family owned Mexican/TexMex restaurant. There is usually a wait, and service is often slow, but the food is excellent and the people are friendly. The portions are large, and the margaritas are delicious. I love the cheese enchiladas with a fried egg on top.

An old feed store turned into a locally-owned “burger joint.” Indoor dining, or outdoor seating on large decks and a beer garden with two bars and a stage for live entertainment. Call for line-up. Order at counter. Lines are sometimes quite long. Wonderful burgers and chicken fried steak.

Now a small chain, Layne’s original location in College Station is still open, serving chicken fingers and a secret sauce. Layne’s is College Station’s answer to Raising Cane’s and Zaxby’s. Order a box of chicken fingers from each place and have a picnic to taste test for yourself to see who truly has the best chicken fingers around.

Iconic Places

Dixie Chicken & Duddley’s Draw at the North Gate of Aggieland. University Drive north of Texas A&M Campus—next door to each other, The Dixie Chicken and Duddley’s Draw are parts of iconic Northgate. Few visitors know that they also serve good food. If you want to eat, go early before the crowds roll in. Northgate has plenty of outdoor space behind the restaurants and bars, so dogs are welcome, but be sure to at least stroll through each bar to get a taste of the local flavor. Parking is at a premium, so you may want to Uber over or walk, and bathrooms frequently have long lines and are a bit rustic. So go before you go.
