Chalet Guidebook: Ylläs / Lapland

Coming from the south, you can take the E8 along the Swedish border via Kemi and Tornio to Kolari. In Kolari, turn onto road no. 939 in the direction of Ylläsjärvi. If you drive through Rovaniemi, drive on road no. 79 to Kittilä. After the center of Kittilä, turn left onto road no. 939 Ylläsjärvi. You can also consider VR’s car train packages, you can take the train in only one direction and drive the other direction.

Travel by night train to Kolari railway station, from where it is only 35 km to Ylläs. You can also transport your car by train for your holiday in Lapland. You can return home by car, or also return by train package. VR car train schedules to Kolari If you come by car train, you can also come to Rovaniemi and drive from there to Ylläs. There is no bus connection from Rovaniemi train to Ylläs.

Kittilä Airport (KTT) is located approximately 35 km from the cottage, and the airport has a bus connection to Ylläsjärvi. If you wish, you can also rent a car from the airport.

You can also comfortably get to Ylläs by bus, both near and far. From the Matkahuolto website , you can browse schedules and purchase tickets for your trip.

The cottage is so centrally located that you can enjoy a pleasant holiday even without your own car. Illuminated ski trails run right next to the cottage, so you can go on ski to do your shopping. You can get to the ski lifts by SkiBus from a nearby bus stop, or a taxi ride of about 2 km to the shop or to the ski lifts costs about € 10. You can even get one way to the store and come back to the cottage with a heavy shopping taxi, the average cost. The slogan “Ylläs in number one” refers above all to the slopes and trails of Ylläs, all of which, according to users, are the best of Finland. The 63 slopes guarantee a varied and rich offer for children and adults, beginners as well as skiers, skiers, snowboarders and telemark enthusiasts. A dog sled is a fun and fast-paced way to move around in nature. Getting to know the husky farm and the dogs is also an experience in itself. There are safaris for many departures depending on whether you want to enjoy a shorter ride on a sleigh, or try sledding on your own 3-6 dog sled. The length of safaris also varies.

Ylläs has about 50 kilometers of marked snowshoe trails. On a guided snowshoe trip, you will hear stories about the nature and villages of Ylläs fells. It’s easy to try snowshoeing on your own: Ylläs has several snowshoe rental equipment and offers a wide range of snowshoe tours . At the chalet, you can find a pair of snowshoes which you can try.

Äkäslompolo, Ylläsjärvi and Luosu offer a wonderful setting for open-air swimming. A lakefront sauna and clear waters lake await swimmers. There are sauna’s which can accommodate even larger groups.

In Ylläs, reindeer can be admired both on the side of the road and on the village track. In winter, reindeer also live on reindeer farms in the area, and in Ylläsjärvi you can meet reindeer in the yard of Aurinkotupa trail café and in Äkäslompolo you can see reindeer in the enclosure next to Jouni’s shop.

Konijänkä Animal Farm offers a variety of nice activities for children in the nature of Ylläs. Snowmobiles, horse-drawn sleigh rides, leash rides, and more.

Ylläs is even a great destination for fishermen. Whether you are aiming for the wild grayling in the flowing water, the mighty rising salmon on River Tornio, or the trout of a crystal clear fell lake, Ylläs should be your destination of choice. Ylläs has countless lakes, ponds, rivers and small streams that offer fishermen the opportunity to try out their skills.

The color splendor of the autumn season (ruska) is truly an experience worth experiencing. The fresh and crisp mornings of September invite the hiker to enjoy the splendor of the fells. From the Ylläs Hiking Routes and Trails map, choose the most suitable hiking route for you and head there in good company. The Seita trail is especially beautiful in autumn time.

In Ylläs you can paddle with Indian canoes, giant canoes for ten people or kayaks. Suitable canoeing rivers are, for example, the Vähäjoki river flowing from Lake Ylläsjärvi, which below forms the Ylläs, Lainio and Äkäsjoki rivers and, of course, the Tornio-Muoniojoki river.

Cloudberry is a precious berry with many nicknames in Finnish: lakka, hilla, suomuurain… In late summer, the cottage’s nearby terrains are filled with cloudberries, cranberries, lingonberries, blueberries – come and pick up Arctic natural resources while enjoying the fresh clean air. In Finland picking berries is free and unrestricted every-mans-right.

Ylläs is only about a 30-minute drive away for one of Finland’s best salmon rivers, the Tornio-Muonio River, or “Väylä”, which is a destination for many fishermen.

Sport Resort Ylläs has an 18-lane, AA2-rated frisbee golf course. The track is located on the Ylläsjärvi side on a slope in stunning scenery about 350-450 meters above sea level. The terrain is a varied mountain terrain with a slope bottom, forest terrain and a height difference of about 140 m.

According to Unesco, Finland has the world's best tap water. This is especially true in Ylläs where the ground water are pure and pristine. Water nourishes, repairs and maintains the body.
