Hiking/swimming holes/lakes

Half day hikes we recommend 1) Kingsland Bay State Park in Ferrisburg, Vt (20 miles north). Spectacular lake views along shoreline cliffs. Park at Ferrisburg town beach parking lot and begin loop trail apx 3 miles long. Go for a swim but be careful. Its rugged and rocky not sandy. Awesome place to kayak. 2) Silver Lake Trail in Salisbury, Vermont (18 mi east). A moderate hike of 5.3 miles roundtrip up old carriage road. On the way up there is a cascading stream with spectacular waterfalls and swimming holes. The lake is great swimming, crystal clean, undeveloped and good chance of seeing loons and bald eagles. Make sure to take the nature trail around the lake. It looks far but really not that bad and its beautiful. 3) Black Mountain Trail, Lake George, New York (30 mi south) Located on Pike Brook Road in Clemons, NY. The drive there is beautiful especially in the fall. A moderate hike of 2-4 hours depending on your timeline. Steep in places. At the top a breathtaking view of the entire northern portion of Lake George, including the island-dotted Narrows , the spectacular Anthony’s Nose and Rogers’ Slide to the north, and the jagged peaks of Tongue Mountain looming across from you. The lower narrow end of Lake Champlain can also be seen and if you know where to look, Shoreham
This is a beautiful undeveloped lake a short hike above a beautiful developed Lake Dunmore. The nature trail hike around the lake is stunningly beautiful and peaceful. Large old growth. Lots of white birch. Bald eagles. Loons. Fabulous swimming in clear, clean water. Primitive camping area but otherwise undeveloped. There is a swimming hole to die for on the trail to the lake. Requires good legs. Its a short steep climb to the pools fed by beautiful waterfalls. Tip...go on weekday, in morning and you might have it all to yourself. 30 minute drive from Shoreham

Lake George drains into Lake Champlain to its north through a short stream, the La Chute River, with many falls and rapids, dropping 226 feet (69 m) in its 3.5-mile (5.6 km) course. Situated on the rail line halfway between New York City and Montreal, Lake George attracted the era's rich and famous by the late 19th and early 20th century. Today its a thriving vacation summer community. On May 31, 1791, Thomas Jefferson wrote in a letter to his daughter, "Lake George is without comparison, the most beautiful water I ever saw; formed by a contour of mountains into a basin... finely interspersed with islands, its water limpid as crystal, and the mountain sides covered with rich groves... down to the water-edge: here and there precipices of rock to checker the scene" .Much busier here. For peace and quiet stay in Shoreham.

Historic

Built by the French during French & Indian War, captured by the British and finally captured by the Americans. Abandoned for years and plundered for stone by locals. Beautifully restored with a top notch museum, powder horn collection and great bookstore for the history lover. Dont forget the Kings Garden and the battle site between Samuel Champlain and his native allies and the fierce Mohawk of the upper Hudson and Mohawk Valleys. The French firearms proved to be decisive and a lake was named and mapped. 5 miles by ferry. 25 or so by Champlain Bridge.

Its the closest ski area to Shoreham. Less than an hour drive. You can ski one of the Mega resorts in Vermont or go for local flavor at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl and have a much better time. It is smaller, but has a full compliment of runs - from steep and bumpy to gentle gliding runs. Its never been crowded when I've gone - even on weekends. Its much less expensive, and the food is a bargain. The main problem is not as much snow making as the big resorts, So - if there is good snow cover - try the Snow Bowl instead.
