Food Scene

In the four years we've lived on the mountain, Idyllwild has become a favorite destination. Our favorite restaurant by far in the entire area is Ferro. The Northern Italian cuisine never disappoints, the setting is beautiful and the staff top notch. Best of all, it's consistent, not an easy thing to find these days. In four years, the quality of the food and service has never faultererd and the same friendly faces greet us by name every time. Be sure to visit Ferro when you stay with us.

La Casita is a winning combo with good food, friendly staff and a beautiful setting. It is by far our favorite Mexican restaurant in the Coachella Valley/Idyllwild area. You won't be disappointed.

A short six mile drive from Skyview; Paradise Valley Cafe is a classic American diner/roadhouse at the intersection of Highways 74 and 371. You'll find lots of neighborhood locals and travelers alike enjoying good honest comfort food served in large portions by friendly staff. The Paradise is a popular destination on weekends for local car and motorcycle clubs. The parking lot is always good for a diverse supply of vintage Corvettes, Porches, Harleys and other assorted rolling iron. Be sure to hit Paradise Valley Cafe when you're in the hood, they do take-out too. Open for breakfast and lunch only.

Sightseeing

Idyllwild is the quintessential alpine hamlet and lies about 23 miles northwest of Skyview. The drive up there is beautiful and will take you through the Garner Ranch. This ranch doubled for the "Ponderosa" on the Bonanza TV series in the late 1950's. It can be seen in the opening credits of each episode. Idyllwild itself was modeled on a Tyrolean mountain village in the 1930's and 40's. Today, it's a time capsule of another time and place. It's home to many fine restaurants and quaint shops. If hiking is your thing, you're in luck. There are several great trailheads in an around Idyllwild, including part of the Pacific Crest trail.

Like Idyllwild, Julian is another picture-perfect time capsule of a village in eastern San Diego County. lt's about 60 miles southeast of Skyview and the drive there is quite beautiful. The two lane road always makes me feel like I've been transported into a John Steinbeck novel. Julian has an adorable downtown section lined with quaint shops and many good restaurants. It's apple growing country, so the town product is apple pie in all of its myriad forms. As such, fall is the best time of the year to go there. It's a bit like going through a time-warp to California of a hundred years ago. And, the smell of pies baking in October is pretty intoxicating. you'll have a good time there!
