This is our favourite local beach -quick to get to, easy, cheap parking, dog friendly all year round and perfect for a long beach walk. Do check the tides though as at high tide there's not a lot of beach left!

City/town information

The fabulous sights, bars and restaurants of York are very much worth a day trip, explore the City Walls and historic city centre and try out some of the local food outlets - you’ll be spoilt for choice, here’s a quick summary of some of our favourites. Il Paradiso del Cibo This place is a rough diamond. Walk past it and you’d probably not even notice it, the modest, trattoria style décor and Italian football on the screen, undersells the incredible food on offer. The owner Paulo hails from Sardinia and he’s brought all the best of his home country culinary delights with him. With a long-list of blackboard specials, and a ‘not on the menu’ tasting menu, you’ll be spoilt for choice. The food is fresh and delicious and the service is energetic and bustly. Take some cash with you though as they don’t accept cards, you’ll probably need to book. Address: 40 Walmgate, York YO1 9TJ Brew & Brownie: the best brunch in town – well, it’s our favourite! Brew and Brownie is our absolute go-to, if you head there on a weekend morning, you’re likely to bump in to us! Brew & Brownie is a gorgeous little café in the centre of York. The creators have come up with some beautiful looking plates of food and, of course, great brews and brownies. It’s likely you’ll need to wait for a table, probably about 10-15 minutes, but we think it’s more than worth it! James tends to go for the American pancake stack with bacon, banana and maple syrup, while I opt for Eggs Royale – there's always some great specials too. If the queue is a little too long, try Bakeshop two doors down, it’s owned by the same people and equally fabulous. Address: 5 Museum St, York YO1 7DT Bars Fossgate - the hipster area of York with loads to choose from including Fossgate Social, Cosy Club, The Hop and Sutlers. The Latin Quarter - if you head towards Stonegate, Little Stonegate and Swinegate you’ll find a lively area with great bars like Evil Eye, Kennedy’s, Sotana, Banyan and the Biltmore. Page Break Activities The York Dungeon The York Dungeon is a 75-minute journey into more than 2000 years of York's horrible history, bringing together horrible characters, immersive sets and thrilling special-effects in a unique and exciting walkthrough experience that you see, hear, feel and smell. Address: 12 Clifford St, York YO1 9RD Jorvik Viking Centre Discover York’s Viking history. The remains of 1,000-year-old houses are revealed beneath your feet, objects taken from the excavations are explored and Viking-age timbers are brought before your eyes. Address: Coppergate Shopping Centre, 19 Coppergate, York YO1 9WT The Chocolate Story If you like chocolate, you’ll like this! Discover the stories behind the greatest names in chocolate with a fully guided, interactive tour through 3,000 years of chocolate making. Journey through the city where chocolate made history and learn the art of the chocolatier with hands-on chocolate making demonstrations. Address: York's Chocolate Story, King's Square, York, YO1 7LD York City Walls York’s City Walls are free, they are open daily to walk on from about 8.00am to dusk, weather permitting. The medieval City Walls, or ‘Bar Walls’ form an ancient monument encircling the historic City of York, and comprise 3.4km (2 miles) of surviving masonry. They are the longest town walls in England, built mainly in the 13th century and offer a fabulous, elevated walk around the city. Check out more information and routes at www.yorkwalls.org.uk
