Sightseeing

How can you visit Athens without paying a visit to the landmark monument and symbol of Western civilization? The magnificent Acropolis monuments of Athens! Tips Book your entrance tickets in advance to skip the lines at etickets. tap.gr If you have participants under 25 years old (discounted), you will have to wait to confirm their age, so make sure you bring IDs or passports. You can also buy a combo ticket at this link that includes all the monuments. Book a tour with a licensed tour guide. One of my Airbnb experiences is the Acropolis monuments with a licensed tour guide. Having a licensed guide will make your visit to these antiquities worthwhile, considering there are so many details, tips, and knowledge you can enrich from this visit. Choose to enter from the South Slopes entrance so you will have the opportunity to visit the Ancient Theatre on the south slopes. Better photo opportunity through this entrance, less crowded and better views. Wear comfortable shoe hats, and have a water bottle (the only food and drink permitted). Up to Acropolis, there is no shade. I prefer to visit before 10:00 am and after 5:30 pm. Acropolis opening times. Winter: December to February 8:00 to 15:00 March to April 8:00 to 17:00 Summer May to August 8:00 to 20:00 September 8:00 to 19:30 October 8:00 to 18:30 November 8:00 to 17:30 Strollers, drinks, or food (unless it is water) are not allowed in the monument area. Acropolis subway station is close to the south slopes entrance (exit to Makrigianni street). A visit to the nearby Acropolis Museum is another excellent idea to complete the visit to Acropolis, enjoy some indoor AC and grab a snack at the museum's restaurant. Excellent souvenir shop too. Again try to book your entrance tickets in advance through the Acropolis museum website (different entrance ticket). A vaccination certificate is mandatory for your visit to the Acropolis museum.

These impressive soldiers represent the 19th-century war custom of Greece. These tall guards can be spotted at Syntagma square, Tomb of Unkown Soldier, and at Herodes Atticus street at the entrance of the Presidential Palace. They represent the modern Greece warriors who liberated the country from the Ottoman empire 200 years ago. These Greek Samurais, called Tsoliades, symbolize the Greek resistance and the victory of a small country against the world's most enormous empire back then. It is an immense pride to be one and the most excellent place to take a photo of them out of the crowds and heat is at the entrance of the presidential palace at Herodes Atticus avenue. I'm proud to say I was one of them during my mandatory service to the Greek army. Photo attached ☺️

Food

Places to dine in Athens
Many people when they visit Greece ask about a famous dish. Local lamb on spit or lamb ribs. Considering it is part of the Greek BBQ tradition as long as it is for the American tradition the pork ribs and steaks a visit to one of the great places on Varis Avenue (20 minutes with UBER from city center about 20 euros cost of the ride) is a must. If you do not like a lamb you can order pork, and beef steaks or a famous dish called "Kontosouvli," pork meat cooked for hours that almost melts in the mouth. It might be a cultural shock for many to see the whole lamb on the spit rolling around. Still, Greece is considered in many parts original, and this originality is unique as the lamb meat is part of the Easter celebration tradition of the country. Order the famous Greek Tzatziki, an excellent sauce for fried potatoes. Greek salad Kontousouvli and Lamb on a spit (1 kilo is perfect for three people) and enjoy their local house wines. A dinner to remember. Look for Mister Giannis's amazing owner with the gigantic mustache and take a photo with him. It is a place you will remember.

You might need to wait in line, but this sandwich place with its 80s atmosphere is a winner. Thirty-two different combinations of choices, hundreds of cheeses and hams, a selection of other pieces of bread can make a fantastic breakfast on a hazy summer Athenian morning. Located at Koukaki, famous for the endless Airbnb apartment choices, this is a place not to skip.

How to get around - Subway and Taxi apps

Athens has a fabulous metro subway system. Most historic city center neighborhoods have 5-minute walk access to a metro station—also, Acropolis monuments have their own subway stop (Acropolis). However, another great way to go around areas is the taxi apps such as Uber and Beat. Taxis in Athens are inexpensive. Wouldnt cost more than 10 euros to go anywhere within the city center. Almost at half the price of other European destinations. Don't grab a taxi from the streets. Careful of your personal belongings in the subway.

ello: Γειά σου (YAH-soo) The less formal way to say "Hi" would just be "Γεια" (Yah). If addressing a group, say "YAH-sas". Nice to meet you: Χάρηκα πολύ (HA-ree-ka po-LEE) How are you?: Tι κανείς (tee-KAH-nis)? Good morning: Καλημέρα (kah-lee-MER-ah) You would say this greeting up until noon, and then for the rest of the day you can use "Γεια" (yah) as the standard greeting.
