STAY Himara

STAY Himara

Where to eat

The cuisine in Himara is highly influenced by the sea and the mediterrenean diet, here are some of my favourite places.
Modern Mediterranean food with amazing view, free parking and truly family hospitality. The chef Christina and her husband Edi returned to Himara after many years out of the country to build their own restaurant. The food is inspired by their roots in Himara and Christina has taken her knowledge from abroad and mixed it into the flavours. Do not miss out this restaurant!

More mezze to the people! This restaurant opened 2021 and was a hit. I am sure you have tried moussaka - but have you tried moussaka with a mezze-style twist? Grab a bottle of retsina and enjoy your company with the sound from the waves.

Blue Bay's location is truly something special. It is located at Livadi beach on the Gonia side (the corner farest from Himara centre) om rop of beach rocks. Except from serving heavenly salads (I recommend the Blue Bay salad), they also have grilled fish, bar, sunbeds and best of all: no traffic! They are open during the summer season. You can hike on a marked path thru the forest a long the coast to get there, as well as driving. With car: when you come down to the beach on the long asphalt strip: park along the road or take to the right in the turn and drive over the new bridge that does not look ready.

You find Iceland at three locations in Himara: The newest one is located at Potami beach across from Taverna Stolis (look for the orange and white shade). The original Iceland is located next to Gonia at the water front in the centre and is very popular among locals and visitors for their high quality ice cream. The third one is closer to the port, next to I love Souvlaki, and there they serve frozen yoghurt.

Cabo del Mar is located at Llaman beach and their menu is influenced by the Italian kitchen. They also have pizza and take-away. It might be a bit tricky to find as you drive down to Llaman beach, here is some help: Follow the dirt road until you have a big stone-gate in front of you, turn left just in front of the gate. Continue a couple of metres and you find the restaurant and their parking at the right side.

If you look to get souvlaki/gyros/grilled during the summer season, look no further this is the place!

Pizza! Pizza! Pizza! This restaurant is driven by a local family and is the first restaurant that opened at the water front. It is without no doubt the place to go if you feel like pizza.

This place, because of it’s location, might be mistaken for a tourist trap - it is not! Try their shrimp saganaki and their sautéed mussels from Butrint. The location is very good, you eat to the view of Porto Palermo castle after enjoying a swim in the bay.

Neighborhoods

Some of my go to places when I want to escape the centre of Himara and get inspired.
Himare fshat, or Castro as we say on a daily basis, is the historical area of Himara. You can reach it by car and by foot. It has great views and is full of Old buildings and churches. While you are up in the Old town make also a visit to Amphora Guesthouse and Cafe.

Up above the sea and the noise you can stroll around an gaze at old buildings and have a coffee or raki at the café that, last time I was there, did not have a name. The road up is also ok for small cars.

Wild beaches

This beach is not far from the centre of Himara and still it is a wild beach! It has no road, the best way to get here is to rent a stand up paddel, a kayak or go by boat. It is also possible to reach it by foot if you are steady. Bring some refreshments and cool them down in the cold water coming up from the sand/small stones in the NW corner of the beach.

What to say about this place – amazing! Combine beach time with history and end the day with food at the nearby restaurant that share the same name as the castle.

Petros and his crew offers two daily tours during the summer season to various beaches not reachable by car. They speak English and take up to 20 guests in the boat. You find The Great Chimera docked at the small port in front of the waterfront in the centre.

Go on a semi-private or a private trip with Niko, an English speaking local fisherman during low season and great navigator of the best hidden places reached by sea during summer. Find his boat tour company at Instagram, get inspired and book your adventure on the Ioanian and Adriatic Sea with him. I recommend the longer trip to Caraburun peninsula with stops in caves and secluded beaches.
