Neighbourhoods

Brighton Marina is situated at the far eastern end of the beach, approximately 1.5 miles from the pier. Its best feature is the boardwalk overlooking the moorings. On a warm evening it can be a lovely place to watch the sun go down with a pizza and a drink in hand. There's loads of popular high street restaurants to choose from as well as three pubs, the best of which is the Master Mariner which has a decent selection of ales and plenty of outdoor seating overlooking the inner marina. The Marina also has a large Asda, an Odeon cinema, bowling alley and David Lloyd gym.

Kemptown stretches from the Old Steine in central Brighton to the eastern outskirts bordering Roedean and Brighton Marina. Kemptown village is situated about 3/4 mile east of the city centre. It sports numerous excellent cafe/restaurants and coffee shops (Ground is a favourite) as well as several good pubs with outdoor seating (The St George's Inn is particularly good). There's also an excellent butcher's, cheese shop and bakery, as well as a good number of quirky shops. The Kemptown seafront is well worth checking out. Next to a popular children's playground and crazy golf, there's Yellowave beach volleyball courts, wood-fired saunas, and Bison bbq beach bar. St James's Street, closest to the city centre, is the hub of Brighton's LGBT scene.

Great places to drink

What better place to drink beer than at the brewery itself? Sure it's on a small industrial estate (just off Roedean Road) but they've done a fab job of making it hospitable. It goes without saying the beers are great, and at retail prices too. There's always some interesting street food too.

A proper little local, and my favourite pub in Kemptown. The ale selection is fairly limited but always good. Inside is cosy and friendly, and there's substantial beer garden. The food has been turned up a notch recently, with excellent burgers and other pub grub.

Favourite coffee spots

The original Kemptown coffee shop, and the second best coffee in Brighton (the best being Coffee@33 on Trafalgar Street). Also excellent teas. Definitely worth popping in for a quick sit down or a flat white to accompany your walk into town.

Lovely cafe next to the beach and the Sealanes pool, seating inside and out. Great Scandi-style pastries, tasty food and really good coffee.

Things to do

Play on one of four beach volleyball courts (on sand, not Brighton's famous stones!). Booking in advance is recommended. It's also a great spot for a drink, either hot or cold - a bit of local's secret. All comers welcome, you don't need to be a volleyball player.

If you don't fancy the walk to or from town then take the train! The quirky little Volks electric railway is the oldest electric railway in the world still operating, and fun for young or old. Trains run from the pier to Black Rock station near the Marina. Tickets are £5 return for adults, £3 for children, dogs are allowed for free.

The undercliff walk runs for 3 miles below the white chalk cliffs from Brighton Marina to Saltdean. You can walk or cycle. The path starts at the back of Asda car park on the Marina. You can walk 1.5 miles to the cafe at Ovingdean gap for an ice cream, or carry on another 3/4 mile to the village of Rottingdean (try to grab a beach view table outside the White Horse). The beach is exposed at low tide, some of which is sandy. Be careful though, because the beach disappears entirely at high tide.

East Brighton park is the entrance to the South Downs National Park. The park itself has a children's play area, two football pitches and cricket pitch. There's a newly opened cafe serving drinks and an interesting mix of Indian/South African/English food.

Food scene

In the middle of Kemptown village, this family run bakery has fabulous fresh bread, pastries, sandwiches and patisserie. Be prepared to queue for a few minutes in Covid times - it's well worth it.

Fantastic takeaway pizza in the middle of Kemptown village, with loads of different options, including vegan. Personal favourites are the 'Nadine' and the 'Jakub'. Order online from https://pizzafacepizza.co.uk. Delivery can be 45 minutes, but if you can collect it'll be ready by the time you get there.
