SIGHTSEEING

One of California’s best examples of modern architecture, the Sundial Bridge in Redding (AKA Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay), is truly a sight to behold. It is a fully functioning sundial that stands over 217 feet tall and is often said to be the biggest sundial in the world, although the truth of this has been debated. It is also a bridge that was provided to the public as a place to hang out and enjoy the beauty that Redding has to offer. The Sundial Bridge is unique and a great road trip stop!

Exploring caves in California is something that has always interested me as I have toured around the state. This cave is on private property, and it is accessed by a ten-minute boat ride and a ten-minute shuttle before you even make it to the mouth of the cave. It is a fun adventure for the whole family!

WATERFALLS

Hedge Creek Falls is a beautiful 35-foot waterfall only a quarter mile walk from the trailhead in Dunsmuir. This waterfall has one unique feature though, there is a large cave carved out behind it, and you can walk directly behind the waterfall.

I don’t get up to Northern California more than a couple of times a year, so I have been waiting for about three months to see the ridiculously amazing McArthur-Burney Falls. I had seen tons of pictures and only hoped that when I saw it in real life, it would be as impressive. I couldn’t even believe how much more amazing it was in real life. The pictures are great, but this waterfall has to be seen to be believed.

The McCloud River Trail passes three beautiful waterfalls as it winds through a canyon of basalt lava rock. This smooth, well-maintained trail offers summer swimming, fall foliage, and an early spring thaw, making it fun and accessible year-round.

NATIONAL PARKS

Lassen Volcanic National Park is one of California’s most underutilized, due mainly to its location in Northern California, but it is also one of its most beautiful. This park has everything from volcanic summits to geothermal areas and waterfalls. It is a must visit in California!

Soaring to 14,179 feet/4,322 meters high, Mt. Shasta scrapes the turquoise-blue sky, north of Redding, a totem from almost anywhere in the northern part of the state. And while some mountains climb gradually, this one rises from surrounding flatlands with such towering, snow-capped majesty that it seems almost unreal—like a child’s notion of what a mountain should be. Yet this is no childish vision—it’s a very real, very big volcano (last erupted in 1786) that is on the bucket list of serious mountaineers. (Famed naturalist John Muir wrote that his “blood turned to wine” when he first caught sight of the Fuji-esque peak.) Summiting the mountain is for the hardiest of climbers; ask about guide services at The Fifth Season outdoor store in the town of Mt. Shasta, a New Age-y enclave on the mountain’s west side. (Get the town’s vibe at The Crystal Room, a prism-filled visual feast.) Fortunately, you don’t have to bag the peak to enjoy this alpine paradise. Easy paths loop through wildflower-filled meadows and into cool forests, where you should keep an eye out for eagles and deer, and just might catch a glimpse of a black bear or two. One of the prettiest trails, a mellow two-mile path along the McCloud River on the mountains south, leads to a trio of waterfalls—all beautiful, though Middle Falls is the real head-turner. Cycling is also a huge draw, as the area offers some of the most stunning scenery and least crowded cycling routes—for both road and mountain biking—in the West. (Rental rides are available at Bike Shasta and Cycle Siskiyou.) There’s camping, caverns, and world-class fly-fishing too. With the arrival of colder weather, there’s skiing at low-key and local Mt. Shasta Ski Park, on the mountain’s western slope. Non-downhill-skiers can take advantage of locations for sledding, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a more pristine area in Northern California than the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. Whiskeytown Lake is the centerpiece of the park that includes four waterfalls, hundreds of miles of trails, and a beautiful beach. Sitting just 8 miles west of Redding, California, there’s something for everyone at Whiskeytown. You can hike a peak, visit a waterfall, go for a swim, enjoy the lake from a boat, go fishing, lounge on the beach, or even do some water skiing. Whiskeytown is a local favorite for Redding residents and is a must-see destination for anyone visiting the area.

COFEESHOPS

In the heart of the up-and-coming downtown area of Redding, this relatively newer coffee shop features coffee beans roasted on-site direct from farmers they have a relationship with. With amazing coffee and a wide-open airy space to get work done, Theory should be on your short-list of coffee shops to go to if you want great coffee and great atmosphere.

With multiple locations to serve you, this is the newest and arguably the best one of the bunch. I like the industrial look and large outside seating area. The food is also great here. My favorite is the Yakuza bowl with smokey pulled pork and veggies on rice with some secret sauce. Their bakery is great too with fresh-baked goodies. They even serve local beer and wine.

FOOD / DRINK

Within steps from Redding’s iconic Sundial Bridge is Mosaic, a California-inspired restaurant specializing in local ingredients with a “wine country twist”. The food is fresh and hearty, and their artisanal pizzas are phenomenal. But our favorite part about Mosaic is their Doggy Menu - complete with doggy ice cream!

If you’re a foodie and have done your research, chances are you’ve heard about Yaks On The 5. What looks like a random roadside restaurant is actually a burger destination that has a cult following to prove it. Their burgers, tots, and homemade cinnamon rolls are so good, they’ve made the Yelp Top 100 List! It’s about an hour outside of Redding, but trust us when we say it’s worth the drive. COME HUNGRY.

If you happen to visit Redding on a Thursday-Saturday, be sure to spend an evening at The Park - Redding’s food truck hub! This casual and family-friendly food truck experience is a total blast, from live music to lawn games, you won’t be bored! And the variety of cuisine is extremely impressive - check out their Instagram to stay up-to-date with what they’re serving, and who’s performing!

DESSERT

Made from scratch and using only natural ingredients, Taste & See Creamery’s ice cream is so fresh, it’s basically healthy! (At least that’s what we tell ourselves.) Regardless, this artisanal ice cream shop is the real deal. You’ll know what we mean after one bite of their signature Nutella Bonfire and S’mores flavor.
