Other famous faces with widely-documented links to the city include comedians Jasper Carrott and Tony Hancock, actor David Harewood (star of American drama Homeland), plus musicians Jeff Lynne, Bev Bevan, Roy Wood, Rob Halford, Toyah Willcox, Jamelia and reggae singer Pato Banton. And of course Duran Duran and girl group Fuzzbox were founded here too.
In addition to the above, acclaimed author JRR Tolkien’s links to Birmingham have been publicised extensively, while inventor of custard Alfred Bird lived here and is immortalised not only in Bird’s Custard but in the city’s Custard Factory arts centre.
Annette Badland, who played Babe Smith in EastEnders and whose film roles include Little Voice and Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, was born in the Edgbaston area of Birmingham in 1950.
Also from Birmingham are actor Michael Staniforth, who played mischievous jester Timothy Claypole in Rentaghost and was born in the Selly Oak area of the city in 1942, and actor/wrestler Pat Roach, best known for his role as bricklayer Bomber in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet. Born in Birmingham in 1937, 6ft 5ins former wrestler Pat also had roles in A Clockwork Orange, Clash of The Titans, Never Say Never Again, Willow, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and two of the Indiana Jones films.
Although radio DJ John Peel is sometimes thought to be from Birmingham, the only reference we can find is that he was a regular compere and visitor at Mothers rock club in Erdington, Birmingham, which was voted the world's best rock venue in 1969 and 1970. Peel also contributed the foreword to Kevin Duffy’s book about the club: Mothers, The Home of Good Sounds 1968-1971.
We should also give a mention to pop duo Hot 'n' Juicy - Emma Southam and her friend Nadine Richardson - who sang on Mousse T's 1998 chart hit Horny and lived in a tower block in Lee Bank, Birmingham. They were discovered while out clubbing together at the Brasshouse in Broad Street, and introduced to record company owner Errol Rennals.
