Arts & Culture

Just opened in early May 2016 destined to become one of the main tourist attractions in Dublin. EPIC sets out to identify the principal elements that have contributed to Irish Identity over the centuries. It covers all aspects of Irish life including history, emigration, Irish art, culture, music, games as well as the influence of Irish missionaries all over the world. It also relates events from recent Irish history including the scandals associated with the economic collapse and with the Church. I would recommend it to all Irish people and to anyone who wants to get a quick understanding of what makes the Irish tick. The exhibition can be seen in the vaults of the CHQ building just beside the Financial Services building on the banks of the Liffey along from the Customs House. Make sure to book your tickets online in advance to secure your preferred date and time slot. By booking online in advance you’ll also get our cheapest price, saving from €1-€3 per ticket. One Ticket – Two Visits! There’s so much to see and do at EPIC that one visit is never enough. That’s why we’ve included a FREE return visit with your ticket within 30 days. Anyone familiar with Irish history, theatre and culture will want to check out the Abbey's productions. History The Abbey Theatre was founded in 1904 by W. B. Yeats and Lady Augusta Gregory. Its precursors were the Irish Literary Theatre and Frank and Willie Fay’s National Dramatic Society. With patronage from Miss Annie Horniman, premises were purchased on Old Abbey Street and on December 27th 1904, the Abbey Theatre opened its doors for the first time. Tragically in 1951, the original buildings of the Abbey Theatre were damaged by fire. The Abbey re-located to the Queen’s Theatre. Fifteen years to the day later, on 18 July 1966, the Abbey moved back to its current home, designed by Michael Scott, on the same site. An evening at the Gate is worth considering when in Dublin. The Gate Theatre has been, artistically and architecturally, a landmark building for over 250 years. Established as a theatre company in 1928 by Hilton Edwards and Micheál MacLiammóir, the Gate offered Dublin audiences an introduction to the world of European and American theatre and also to classics from the modern and Irish repertoire. It was with the Gate that Orson Welles, James Mason and Michael Gambon began their prodigious acting careers. WEBSITE: Write "Gate Theatre" in your Browser for current productions and prices.

The GAA Museum could just as easily come under the heading of Culture. The majority of Irish people enjoy/ed playing our national games growing up and the majority of Irish people are passionate about their local parish and county teams. The Gaelic Athletic Association is an inherent part of modern Irish culture. A visit to the Museum will allow you to see our National stadium which can hold c. 80,000 and is always full to capacity for both the hurling and Gaelic football finals in September. If you are adventurous you can also take the stand top tour with its marvelous elevated view of Dublin and the sea. If you are visiting from May to September look out for a scheduled championship hurling/football game on any Saturday or Sunday in Croke Park itself but also in many venues throughout the country. If you have not seen our national games try to catch a hurling game during your stay. I think you will be impressed by the skills on display. The Cathedral is today the National Cathedral of the Church of Ireland (a church of the Anglican communion) and also serves as a popular tourist attraction in Ireland. The earliest manuscript dates Christ Church Cathedral to its present location around 1030. Dúnán, the first bishop of Dublin and Sitriuc, Norse king of Dublin, founded the original Viking church, which was probably subject to the archbishop of Canterbury. By 1152 it was incorporated into the Irish church and within a decade the famous archbishop Laurence O’Toole had been appointed. This future patron saint of Dublin began a reform of the cathedral’s constitution along European lines and introduced the canons regular of Saint Augustine forming a cathedral priory, which was to survive until the Reformation Write "Christ Church Cathedral" in your Browser for current opening times and prices.
