Food scene

Great to visit in all weather essentially a converted industrial unit with a feature fire engine inside they have managed to make it really cosy inside and when the weathers good the doors open to lots of outdoor seating. Run by firemen who sale there own coffee, so a good option for coffee enthusiast. Food is traditional and reasonably priced. Bees knees bakery provide all the cakes and they are definitely worth trying. I will often visit for breakfast on a Saturday morning and take a cake for the road. Check them out on Instagram aswell they quite often host events

Very traditional in terms of food and decor but you can’t beat the panoramic views of Portlands unpredictable coast. Right on the tip next to the lighthouse. You can hunker down inside if a storm is happening watching the fierce waves crash in. Or on a sunny day sit outside and explore the lighthouse and climb around the rocks . Make sure to visit the gift shop where you can pick up local gifts. I recommend the Sunday roast and have been there many many times. Make sure to book in advance in you want a roast. Beef, chicken or vegetarian options.

This cafe has the best views of chesil . Only outdoor seating and they close between the months of Jan and March so it’s better here with good weather. Again traditional food but reasonably priced. I quite often go here in the summer for a morning swim followed by full English breakfast. Also a great place to watch the sun go down with a hot or cold drink. In peak summer they have a paella night and will often host live music. Please note in peak holiday season this place gets busy and with only a small capacity alot of people tend to get turned away. Be sure to boon in advance to avoid disappointment

The only place to go for fish and chips on Portland. Lots of vegan options aswell. Get some chips and head to the beach for a lovely evening. In peak summer this please gets very busy and the ques can get long. I would recommend ordering online earlier in the day or the day before and you can just pick up your order at an agreed time whilst the people in the Que look on in utter disbelief / jealously

Sightseeing

Where do I start with chesil beach it’s my favourite place ever and a big reason why I wanted to move to Portland having lived in London for so many years. The beach is just so stunning and unpredictable as the seasons change. One day you could be stand up paddle boarding in the calmest waters watching the sun set the next storm sets in and brave surfers are out catching the waves as they crash in. I’ve had so many nice moments on this beach every month of the year. I will share some pictures . You can’t say you’ve been to Portland if you haven’t watched the sun go down on chesil.

https://www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk/walksdb/184/ This website can explain the path better than me but it’s essentially a 10/13 mile route around the entire perimeter of portland. If you have the whole day to do it I would thoroughly recommend. If time is limited I would recommend starting at the Olympic Rings and making your way south west. The view just gets more and more dramatic the further you travel along. On route you can find tout quarry and the circle of Stones and tap into traditional and modern quarrying methods.
