Places where we love to eat and/or drink!
Now called River Run Lodge: We highly recommend River Run and suggest linking up to their FB page before your trip, so you can check when they will be open, before you take the slightly spooky drive to Strathblane (just 10mins from Dover) - the RR team makes a point to showcase local Dover seafood and Tasmanian produce in general, plus the drinks are a little bit fancy (try the signature Gin Fizz), and the ambiance is fantastic, especially in these cooler months with a roaring fire inside!

The Bakehouse Distillery is located in Dover (across from the fire station) - here you can see the distilling process at work and taste the world’s first sassafrass-inspired spirit - please have a look at their website for more info and opening times for tastings!

Renowned through the southern parts of Tasmania as a top pick foodie destination. But its very hard to get into so make sure you book ahead if you want to grab a bite to eat here!

One of my favourite places for lunch, but definitely worth a detour from Honville when heading south! The food is always great, and the setting is quite relaxed and eclectic - I've been there on a cold and rainy day and shared an outside table with a chicken, so you just never know what will transpire!

An Italian restaurant where the kitchen picks their own-grown herbs, and where the seafood is wild and line/hand caught - what's not to love??

An absolutely gorgeous boutique winery run by the loveliest couple, just a few mins drive from the Sandlfy intersection on your way form Kingston to Huonville. Not only are their wines oustanding (they converted me to being a white wine drinker after tasting their Pinot Grigio) but Andrea's chutneys and jams, made from her own seasonal garden's produce, are so moorish you will definitely come back... for more!!

Must-do things to see and do during your stay in Dover
Southport has a beautiful beach in a mostly protected bay, with crystal clear water which is great for a refreshing swim on a warm day. Its also a fantastic spot to catch the Southern Lights if they are happening. And in the warmer months, make sure you stop into teh Rocket at the End of the Road for something delicious to eat and drink!

A beautiful historic village on the banks of the Huon River with a proud wooden boat building heritage, some great foodie options for lunch/dinner and a random driftwood sculpture on the river banks as you head out of town. Stop off at one of many roadside fruit stalls to pick up a bag of apples or other fruit in-season on your way to the Far South

A beautiful old forestry town, with several options for lunch and snacks, if you are stopping in at Geeveston, try and also make some time to explore the Platypus Walk on the edge of town!

If you come to the Apple Isle, and visit the Huon Valley, you really should pop into Willie Smith's for a quick drink or bite to eat - they have a lovely beer garden, a great menu and some cool souvenirs to take back home as well. Their weekend markets also provide local makers and producers an opportunity to sell their goods directly to the public!

Hastings Caves have beautiful caves to visit, and a number of gorgeous walks available through ancient rainforests. The thermal pools can also be a great option for families (as long as the water isnt too cool), with a large undercover area and bbqs for a sheltered picnic lunch.

Witness the Wonders of the Night Sky!

Tasmania is the best place in Australia to see the Southern Lights, and Dover is the ideal place to base yourself if there is any activity predicted, as the village itself faces due south looking over the Bay. Even when there is no Aurora predicted, on a clear night, I guarantee you will see more stars than you can imagine is possible!
If seeing the Aurora Australis (nuyina) is on your bucket list, come to Dover!! At Beachcombers, our lounge room and balcony (and bedroom) are facing directly south - that means that we have a warm and cost front row seat when the Southern Lights are dancing, - you wont even have to leave home to see this wonder of nature (unless you want to!). So if you are sitting inside and it looks like the Taylor's Hill (across the bay) is ‘backlit’, grab your camera, because there is nothing behind those hills but wilderness; and that gentle glow you can see with your naked eyes is the Lady Aurora! So grab your camera and have a look to see the vivid greens and other colours through the lense of the camera - even a later model phone camera can capture the lights if you have a night view option! And for clear views of the southern horizon at ground level, you could also head down to Southport, or Big Roaring Beach ( Surveyors Bay) with your camera and tripod instead, but please drive slowly and carefully to avoid hitting the gorgeous and vulnerable wildlife creatures that roam the wilds between dusk and dawn... And if there is no Aurora activity, the clear night skies of Dover are still an incredible sight to behold... You would be hard-pressed to find a town with so little light pollution, that even within the town (and even with street lights visible) the night sky is still so clear that you can easily see the dark areas within the millions of stars of our Milky Way, and so many shooting stars and satellites whizzing across the sky... it's really quite incredible! I've taken some amazing photos of the Aurora and Milky Way just from the bottom of my driveway!! Check out the Southern Wilds insta page to see what we have seen just in the past few months inthe night skies of the Far South...

Dover Wharf: Buy fish directly from the fisherman!

One of our local deep sea fishermen ‘Johnny’ sells his catch directly from his boat after he docks from a deep sea fishing tip - you can watch as the deck hand fillets the fish while Astrid brokers the deals - he puts up signs around town to let local s know when he is selling, but we are on a special contact list for locals to be notified directly as well... Its something pretty special to see, and you wont get a fresher fish to eat unless you’ve caught it yourself!

Farm Gates and Local Markets of the Huon Valley!

Before your visit I would encourage you to do a little googling to find out what markets will be running during your stay and/or which farm-gates will be open - we also have a huge wealth of talented and passionate local makers and producers around! There are a few located close to the town of Geeveston, and others scattered along the Huon Hwy as you head towards Dover from Huonville.

Local Beaches are the Best

The two best beaches in the Dover vicinity are Roaring Bay Beach at Surveyors Bay for the whitest sand and clearest waters; and Kent Beach just past the caravan park on the foreshore - if you want to sound like a local making beach plans, you can just say " I'll meet you at the blue boats"...
