Restaurant Entraguas is a well-known reference in Cascais for its excellent balanced cuisine, excellent warm service and responsive service provided. The restaurant's name was inspired by its oceanfront location, where the waters of the Tagus meet the Atlantic. Of course, the view over the ocean is one of its hallmarks. Especially at the end of the day, as the horizon paints itself with soft colors and the sky starts to fade away. For the soft atmosphere that characterizes the restaurant, its well-thought-out lighting is very important. This restaurant has amazing seafood that will just blow you away. Surely it is worth a visit or two while in Cascais.

Museus in Cascais

In this section, we bring you our handpicked selection of museum options in Cascais.
The Casa das Historias Paula Rego was designed by the architect Eduardo Souto de Moura. The building makes use of certain aspects of the region's historical architecture, which is here reinterpreted in a contemporary way. It can be immediately recognised thanks to its two pyramid-shaped towers and the red-coloured concrete used in its construction. The land and trees which previously existed at the site are incorporated as fundamental elements, while four wings, of varying heights and sizes, make up the building. The building itself is subdivided into rooms which lead into one another and are laid out around the higher central room which houses the temporary exhibition. The building's interior has 750m2 of exhibition space, on top of the technical and service areas, and is decorated in neutral shades and paved with the blue-grey marble of Cascais. The building also houses a shop, a café which opens onto a verdant garden and an auditorium with 200 seats. “With the Casa das Historias, it can be said that Eduardo Souto de Moura has adopted and almost ‘regionalist' approach, distancing himself from the modem abstractionism that has been a dominant feature of his work. It is, however, an uncritical regionalism, that avoids the sense of ‘resistante' which lay behind other attempts at the approach in Portugal in the 1980s. In this museum created for Cascais, Souto de Moura associates certain formal devices with a legacy of architectural composition, adopting specific formulas for the building's insertion in the surrounding area as well as a use of scale which can be easily contextualized in a very specific type of geography. Its close proximity to the work of Raul Lino is therefore set in a “Southern” landscape, without resorting to any unnecessary decorative or picturesque frills.”

It’s a space for memory. The Henrique Sommer House is now the place for the Historical Municipal Archive. Where the visitor can find the Past and prepare for the Future. It looks like a white monolith rising in a green garden next to the Church of Our Lady of Assunção. At the Museum Quarter the visitor can find a summer house built in 1894 that still holds today the name of the original owner: Henrique Sommer. He was a descendant of a German family settled in Portugal. His grandfather was Baron Heinrich von Sommer, linked to the iron trade through Casa Sommer & Co. Later, Henrique’s name would be known as the “father” of the cement industry in Portugal. At the death of the businessman, who left no descendants, the house passed into the possession of multiple branches of his family. Its last use dates from the 80’s decade when it accommodated the Centre of Culture and Sport of the Municipality of Cascais, and later it was abandoned. In 2003, it is acquired by the City Hall and adapted as a building for the municipal Department of Culture. Declared a Property of Municipal Interest in 2005, it was recovered and opened to the public in December 2016, with a project by the architect Paula Santos. Today, Margarida Sequeira, Conceição Santos and Maria da Luz, are among others who spend part of their daily life in this house. They are called “The Guardians of Memory”. They are the faces and minds of the historical archives that can be consulted by the general public at the house library. Several rooms well protected and fully equipped can store a quite appreciable quantity of papers of memory in the foundations of this building. The visitor will no longer be able to find the same interior decoration that made the house a place of choice for his original owner. But, the new mission of the house deserves a visit. There, you can read and even acquire, for instance, a copy of the book “Cascais – 650 Years”. And, who knows, find if some member of your family ever stayed at one of the historical hotels whose files are now in this archive. This house has now the mission to collect, organize, preserve and share the documentation in its custody. It’s fundamental for the reconstitution of the past of the municipality. And also for its future. In this sense, in addition to the management of documents produced and received by the City Council in the exercise of its activity, it is also required to handle all documents considered of interest for this purpose, received by purchase, deposit or donation, as well as the promotion of editions, exhibitions and conferences related to the collection or the local history.

The Santa Marta Lighthouse Museum, which is right next to Casa de Santa Maria, occupies the former fort and the lighthouse with the same name. The Museum Condes de Castro Guimarães, the former "Torre de S. Sebastião", was built in 1900 by Jorge O'Neill. A classic example of "summer architecture", the building features eclectic elements, inviting visitors to enter a kingdom of fantasy and wonder celebrated in this 19th century revival of the era of romance. In 1910, the Count Manuel de Castro Guimarães acquires the house and after is dead (1927) donated his state, including his garden, to the people of Cascais. His desire was to built an art museum and a public library. The museum opened on July 12, 1931. The Museum Condes de Castro Guimarães collection includes significant national and international paintings, furniture, porcelain and jewelry. Another important part of museum collection is the Crónica de El-Rei D. afonso Henriques (Chronicle of King Afonso Henriques) (1505) by Duarte Galvão, whose Prologue page includes artwork by the miniaturist António d'Ollanda.

“Terceirense” viola, “micaelense” viola, Portuguese mandolin, harmonium, castanets, “adufe” tambourine... we could go on and on with a list of Portuguese musical instruments, and almost certainly there would be one of each in the Museum of Portuguese Music - Casa Verdades Faria. Here are the estates of two major figures ain Portuguese culture, Michel Giacometti and Fernando Lopes-Graça, along with the personal collection of conductor Álvaro Cassuto. The building was designed by Raul Lino; there’s also a pleasant garden, free of charge, where you can catch some fresh air on sunny days.

The King D. Carlos Sea Museum is located in the precinct of the former Sporting Club de Cascaes, founded in 1879 by Prince Carlos, later King D. Carlos I. For several decades of the 20th century, the building, also known as Clube da Parada, was the stage of many social events, a place of leisure and amusement. From 1976 onwards, awareness of the importance of the maritime heritage of Cascais and of the socio-economic changes resulting from the gradual and systematic reduction of fishing and production of its derivates, that for centuries had dictated the economic activities and way of life of many inhabitants, resulted in the acknowledgement of the appropriateness of a Museum of the sea, dedicated to the memory of those connected to such environment. This process culminated in the construction of the Sea Museum, its formal inauguration taking place on June 7, 1992. Of the 19th century building, only the Octagonal Room, today the first gallery in the exhibition space, remains. The remaining rooms result from later additions to the compound. There we find the ever-growing collection that has been brought together throughout the years together as well as public-oriented services, such as the Library and the Education Department, or internal offices (storage area, conservation laboratory). Under permanent growth and updating, the museum has been recently seen a reformulation of the exhibition discourse, adapting it to the expectations and needs of visitors, and of the younger audiences. This is achieved through a more dynamic and interactive language, using new technologies, creating moods and messages that meet the social, cultural and scientific concerns of the present. Increasingly concerned with the study and awareness-raising of the issues surrounding biodiversity and the environment, further refurbishments and new exhibitions are planned.

This 15th century citadel, overlooking Cascais marina at the mouth of the Tejo Estuary, has played a crucial role in the history of Portugal, having witnessed fights against pirates as well as battles against Spanish and French forces. The original fort and tower, Torre de Santo Antonio de Cascais was built on the orders of King John II of Portugal and completed in 1490, as part of a series of defensive positions to protect the city of Lisbon from invasion by sea. But in 1580 the defences proved inadequate to resist invasion by the Duke of Alba, who claimed Portugal for the Spanish King Philip II of Spain (the king who launched the Spanish Armada against England). The Spanish added further defences here, including the Fort Nossa Senhora da Luz garrison. In 1755 the earthquake and tsunami which devastated Lisbon caused significant damage to the citadel. The fort and tower were rebuilt and played an important defensive role during the Napoleonic Wars. A century later, in 1871, King Louis I of Portugal had the fort converted into a royal summer residence. After the abolition of Portugal’s monarchy, parts of the fort continue to be used for state occasions and to house visiting foreign dignitaries. Today part of the former military barracks have been converted into living accommodation for the Pestana Cidadela Cascais, a five-star luxury hotel, which tastefully blends modern comforts with the historic surroundings and features an on-site Art Centre. There is also a museum in the citadel, offering guided tours.
