Food Scene

Rabalias is a neighborhood cornerstone, and it's about a ten minute walk from our house. If you like breakfast, it has the best in the County with made to order beignets (like a big square powdered sugar covered donut!), excellent coffee, and hearty dishes -- my favorite is the Redneck Breakfast with fried green tomatoes. Also, Tuesday is Fried Chicken night which is not. to. be.missed.

Don't let this little corner store fool you... hidden in the back is a small take-out restaurant with the best Mexican food in town. My favorite is the carnitas Torta (with crema and pickled jalapenos!) and the breakfast burritos are tasty, hearty and cheap. Other standouts include the tri-tip sandwich and the mini tacos.

Our little airport is world famous -- Steve McQueen learned to fly here!--- and it's still the "wild west" of aviation. Eat any meal at this traditional diner overlooking the runway and enjoy the exceptional proximity to small planes landing and taking off. If you're lucky, you may even see stunt planes practicing in the aerobatics box. It will take your breath away! There's most always a wait at the restaurant because the portions are large, the food is hot, and the service is great.

A Wine Spectator award-winning restaurant in a commercial complex? Huh!? Don't worry, it will all make sense after your first perfectly crafted Manhattan, and one taste of the au gratin potatoes and prime rib. A true GEM and our favorite restaurant. Open Wednesday through Saturday. If you can't get a reservation, show up and see if you can sit at the bar.

Parks & Nature

A large park with lots of iconic oak trees, a babbling brook, picnic tables and lots to explore. There's also a small playground for the littles.

Arts & Culture

A great little museum with a small collection of local art. Free on the first Sunday of the month. Also the Cole Creativity Center (part of the art museum) has lots of art classes and other activities for kids, families and adults.
