Parks & Nature

Visit Rocky Cape National Park, which is known as Tangdimmaa to the Aboriginal people, where you can go for some short walks to Aboriginal caves or a longer walk on the Postman's Track through to Sisters Beach. For experienced Rock climbers there are also some Rock climbing opportunities and you can find information online by searching for the Tasmanian climbing guide. There are 2 boat ramps for all weather, the western ramp has no jetty, is a beach between rocks & will need a 4x4 to launch boats over 4 meters. SS Southern Cross is a wreck for diving off Rocky Cape, excellent fishing & snorkeling spots and the rocky beaches are interesting to explore. You will need a National parks pass to visit this area and you may obtain this at the Rocky cape Roadhouse local shop on the corner of Bass Highway & Port Road.

A great place to go and experience the quiet of the wet Eucalypt forest and the spectacular falls, but my favorite thing to see is the Big Tree. An ancient, stringy bark standing 62m tall with a 16m girth, it has been there for around 400 years. Local and interstate Firefighters fought hard to save this beauty in the 2016 bush fires. If you love nature like me it is definitely worth a visit.

Sightseeing

Established in the early 1800s, Stanley’s street scape is lined with genteel, colonial buildings and fine cafés. Stanley is Circular Head’s premier tourism town and a walk down the main street is akin to walking through living history. Stanley was chosen as the main location to film "The Light Between Oceans" in 2014 and locals were cast for minor roles alongside Rachael Weisz and Michael Fassbender. Looming over the historic town is the affectionately named ‘Nut’, the solidified lava lake of a long extinct volcano. visitors can walk up a steep, challenging path to the summit or take a leisurely chairlift ride. Either way, 360° views await, as far as the eye can see. There is a cafe and gift shop at the base of the nut chairlift if you are peckish!

Food scene

On the way to or from Dip falls, there is a great place to stop and sample some local Tarkine wilderness honey and refreshments. My personal favourite is Leatherwood Honey, which comes from the nectar of a tree found only in Tasmanian rainforests.

Watersports

Detention River has the best fishing on the North West Coast. Trolling light gear using a small lure in a boat near the mouth is like small scale game fishing when Cocky Salmon hit, which is best 30 minutes before high tide. Launching a small boat (up to 6 meters) is easy at Myora Park, across the Bass Highway from the Detention River Shop. The river is suitable for exploring in canoes, SUPs, swimming or just fishing for Mullet from the river bank using local sand worms.
