5 minutes walk from the studio, view over Jing'an Temple, drinks tailor made to your liking / mood. A small bar by Eddie Yang, one of Shanghai's iconic bartenders. If you see Eddie, tell him I sent you!
It is a well known bar, but the entrance can be challenging to find, accross the street from The Paramount, enter through a tiny service elevator.

2号 Hua Shan Lu5 minutes walk from the studio, view over Jing'an Temple, drinks tailor made to your liking / mood. A small bar by Eddie Yang, one of Shanghai's iconic bartenders. If you see Eddie, tell him I sent you!
It is a well known bar, but the entrance can be challenging to find, accross the street from The Paramount, enter through a tiny service elevator.
The Union is a bit further away from the flat, but well worth it. A small bar packing a lot of heat. Yao Lu - recently China winner of Chivas Masters bartender competition - has trained an amazing team of bartenders, together with whom he created a surprising drinks list : twists on classic cocktails with excellent and enticing names ... the signature cocktail list at its best. In the spirit of openness emanating from the Chinese born / America bred Yao, the atmosphere is friendly and busy. A great place to socialize around a great drink. Also by far the best bar food in town, developed by renown chef Austin Hu ( Madison )

Right in the middle of the Wuding Lu bar strip, less than 10 minutes walk from the flat. Malabar is a relaxed spanish bar serving authentic tapas all day and up to late at night. Perfect to have an early drink, their happy hour will set you up with 20rmb quality beer (forget Heineken and the likes), 35rmb decent Spritz cocktails or house wine. A must go for a quick drink or a whole evening.

Right in the middle of the Wuding Lu bar strip, less than 10 minutes walk from the flat. Malabar is a relaxed spanish bar serving authentic tapas all day and up to late at night. Perfect to have an early drink, their happy hour will set you up with 20rmb quality beer (forget Heineken and the likes), 35rmb decent Spritz cocktails or house wine. A must go for a quick drink or a whole evening.

If you show up early enough in the evening, or if you get lucky, you might get a seat in this excellent cocktail and whisky bar. Crowd is mixed locals and foreigners, decor is hype but low key enough. Huge selection of whiskys. Try their Lophraig Project cocktail for a solid smocky and herbal evening setter cocktail.
Sightseeing
5 minutes walk from the flat, super iconic / super central landmark Jing'an Temple surrounded with modern and beautiful high rises. This newly renovated huge temple receives thousands of visitors everyday who go pray, burn incense sticks, throw coins at statutes for good fortune, crouch to an impressive buddha sculpture, and explore the many balconies. All this to the sound of hundreds of tiny bells clinking on a windy day.
Closes at 5.30 pm. Entrance 50rmb , free on the 1st and 15th of each lunar month

Jing'an Temple

A 10 minutes taxi ride or a half hour discovery of the neighborhood through Jing'an, The Jade Buddha Temple is a classic not too far from the flat. The story says the temple was saved during the Cultural Revolution (as the trend of the time was to erase all signs of religion) by the monks who had the genius idea of plastering the walls of the temple with posters of Chairman Mao - more sacred than anything, even now to some extent.
Don't pay extra for the underwhelming Jade statutes, strolling around the temple and spotting or hearing monks going about their business is enough of an experience. Closes at 4pm.
