The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District began offering the public access to Wilson Navigation Lock in May 2014. The lock is accessible to visitors Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and federal holidays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. throughout the year. It will only be closed to the public when it is drained and closed for periodic maintenance. The Corps restricted access to the lock following Sept. 11, 2001 as a security precaution, but district officials now support allowing the public into these areas to foster better community relations and to let people see how the lock facilitates movement of commerce within the U.S. Inland Waterway System. Wilson Navigation Lock is one of 10 locks (14 locks if including auxiliary locks) located on the 650-plus navigable miles in the Tennessee River Basin. The original project was completed by the Corps in 1927. In 1959, the Tennessee Valley Authority completed the main single-lift lock, along with several related improvements, to replace the old and inadequate double-lift lockage system. It began operating Nov. 10. 1959. The modified auxiliary lock was reopened on Feb. 9, 1961. TVA owns the project; the Corps is responsible for navigation and is charged to operate and maintain the locks. The main lock is a single chamber measuring 110-feet wide and 600-feet long. On average 10 million tons of commodities are transported through the lock every year, which include wheat, corn, scrap metal, and chemicals. There are more than 1,000 lockages for recreational traffic each year. It is the highest single lift lock east of the Rocky Mountains with a normal lift of between 93 and 100 feet.

Odette is a neighborhood eatery and shop in historic downtown Florence, Alabama serving elevated American fare with southern and international influences. The menu features locally‑ and sustainably‑sourced ingredients in a contemporary, inviting and comfortable atmosphere. Owner Celeste Pillow has created the neighborhood restaurant she’d like to frequent. Through her experience working in Manhattan restaurants and her love of food and art, Celeste has modeled Odette, named for her paternal great‑grandmother, to embody the modern approach of urban, farm-focused dining without the pretension. Chef Quick creates unique dishes that pair new flavors with traditional preparations. An emphasis is put on items made in-house, from the breads and house‑cured meats, to the roasted red pepper‑thyme ketchup. In 2011, Chef Quick was invited to cook at the prestigious James Beard House in New York City, where he prepared a “Homegrown Alabama” menu featuring Alabama producers and growers. He continues to draw on sustainably‑raised Alabama ingredients from Jack‑O‑Lantern Farms, Shamrock Farms and Cox Butcher, among others. The Director of The James Beard House said of Chef Quick’s cuisine, “His menu is lyrical with Southern touches and preparations but modern and elegant, as well.” A long bar designed for enjoying both cocktails and meals is beautifully detailed with a solid-slab concrete top and handmade tiles below. Odette’s full bar menu offers artfully executed classic libations from the vault, alongside new tricks that demonstrate a culinary approach in marrying cocktail flavors. General Manager, Kristy Bevis, has curated a quality‑focused wine selection that thoughtfully compliments Chef Josh Quick’s cuisine, and a craft beer selection that highlights in‑state brews. Chef Quick and Celeste have collaborated with their team to make healthful, delicious food while utilizing the best local ingredients available. Through Odette, they continue to not only broaden their own educations, but also those of the staff and their community.

The diner started off as just a griddle among the groceries, but slowly expanded to become the unofficial community center it is today. Visitors asking where the locals eat will almost always be directed here. The building itself is almost of another time. The façade looks exactly as it did decades ago: a basic storefront with a metal awning and an unadorned sign. The interior is a mix of modern and rustic; plastic tables sit underneath a pressed tin ceiling. Inside you will find a complete lack of pretension—a mix of young and old diners and, next to the griddle, a notorious table of regulars often referred to as “The Liars Club.” The food at Staggs is made-to-order using fresh ingredients and cooked on a flattop griddle, giving it a distinct home cooked flavor. You can’t go wrong with any of the breakfast offerings; the eggs and bacon, omelets, and biscuits are all satisfying. At lunch you can enjoy the massive, absolutely revered Staggs hamburger, cooked to order—to your exact specifications. (For the record, Staggs’s burger was fourth in a recent AL.com North Alabama’s top Cheeseburger poll.) The menu at Staggs extends beyond burgers, too. There are many breakfast and lunch options, including everyone’s favorite, biscuits and chocolate gravy (served only on Fridays).

Jack's is an Alabama fast food chain....BUT don't let the term "fast food" turn you away. Jack's has THE BEST biscuits around. Noone comes close to their sausage or bacon, egg & cheese biscuits!

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals is home to two 18-hole championship courses and lies between the Wheeler and Wilson dams on the Tennessee River. Wheeler Dam is named in honor of General Joseph "Fighting Joe" Wheeler - the only Confederate General to attain the same rank later in the United States Army. The Fighting Joe course at The Shoals was the first Trail course to break 8,000 yards. Travel + Leisure Golf named Fighting Joe one of the top new courses in 2004. The second course, the Schoolmaster (named for President Woodrow Wilson who was responsible for getting Wilson Dam built and was also known as "The Schoolmaster" of politics), opened in the Summer of 2005.
