Excellent Italian Cuisine and reasonably priced. Offer early bird specials at the bar from 5-6 pm; and late night specials after 9:30 pm. Nice atmosphere and only 5 minutes from my house.

Lava Java can be a pastry/coffee shop or sit down breakfast dining depending on your mood. A great place for a bite to eat before heading out sightseeing and beach time.

The address for this restaurant is the sister store in Waimea. The Tres Mex I am describing is in the Waikoloa Highlands Shopping Center (address not listed). Very good take away Mexican Cuisine, open from 11-8. Closed on Sundays. Combo plates, specials and if you're really hungry, the Burrito Grande will bust your belly! This is my go to favorite when I'm in a hurry and very hungry!

Hawaiian Style Cafe is arguably the best breakfast place on the island. Gigantic, humongous portions, and inexpensive. Pancakes (a side dish) are platter size. Try the the different Loco Mocos on the menu. Might have to wait for seating in the Waimea restaurant. There is also the newer restaurant in Hilo with more seating. After breakfast here, you won't need to eat till dinner! Love this place.

65-1290 Kawaihae RdHawaiian Style Cafe is arguably the best breakfast place on the island. Gigantic, humongous portions, and inexpensive. Pancakes (a side dish) are platter size. Try the the different Loco Mocos on the menu. Might have to wait for seating in the Waimea restaurant. There is also the newer restaurant in Hilo with more seating. After breakfast here, you won't need to eat till dinner! Love this place.
While touring and heading towards Waipio Valley or Hilo, stop by Tex Drive In just off the highway in Honokaa. Local style plate lunches, breakfast, curry rice bowls (Yummm) but you must have a Tex Malasada! A Portuguese pastry with different fillings; my favorite is Bavarian Creme. You'll love it.

Informative star gazing program at the Mauna Kea Visitors Center at 9200' is offered for free on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday. You can look through telescopes set up by park rangers. Arrive before sunset to take a 15-20 minute hike to view a stunning sunset from above the clouds. Bring warm clothes as it's chilly after dark. The visitors center is 46 miles each way from Haleaquacat and drive time about 1 hour.
