For a small town, Hoedspruit offers an amazing assortment of great places to eat. There are a few, long-running favourites, with new contenders opening on a regular basis.
This is one of our favourite places in town. The offer a selection of home-baked goods, great breakfast and friendly service. Their daily quiche is one of Annette's favourites.

One of Hoedspruit's most popular restaurants, the Hat and Creek is the higher-end dining choice in town. It is particularly good for dinner. They have great game meat dishes. The lamb curry is also one of our favourites. A good selection of wines and fabulous desserts make for a great evening.

Tucked away in the old railway station, Sleepers has been a local hang-out for years. They serve great breakfast, lunch and dinner. They have an extensive menu and daily specials. You will always find locals here. Note- it is located just off the R40, behind the petrol station near La Bamba- not where it currently appears on the AirBnB map.

Located at he entrance to Raptor's View Estate, on the right, just as you are entering town from Zandspruit Estate, Maroela Bar is fast becoming a local favourite. They make great wood oven pizza and a variety of casual meals. They offer a great assortment of beers both on tap and bottled.

A few kilometers out of town, heading north on the R40 is the very popular Thirsty Giraffe. No one does Peri-peri roast chicken better. They serve a variety of Mozambican recipes, as well as more traditional grills and wood oven pizza. Heading north on the R40 from town, watch for the sign on your left, just after you pass Tshukudu Game Reserve (which will be on the right).

They serve a variety of Mozambican recipes, as well as more traditional grills and wood oven pizza. Heading north on the R40 from town, watch for the sign on your left, just after you pass Tshukudu Game Reserve (which will be on the right).

Overlooking the Oliphants River, this is a beautiful spot to linger over lunch. They specialize in wood oven pizza and also offer a full menu of sandwiches, salads and grills. Occasionally they have live music in the evenings. They also offer multi-course menus for special holidays.
Located at the Bosveld centre, 2 kms south of town on the R40, Anne's Cotton Club Cafe does lovely breakfast and lunches. Their menu changes seasonally, but usually features a variety of sophisticated options. Their Sunday lunch is particularly popular (reservations are recommended).

This popular new addition by one of Hoedspruit’s most popular chefs is located in the Zandspruit commercial area, just down the road from Nkanyi House. The menu highlights pork but also features other meats and vegetarian dishes. They have a great cocktail list, all served in their stunning open-air patio with a few of the mountains.

There are a broad selection of curries and other Indian dishes, with a choice of meat or vegetarian proteins. Kalimambo is very popular amongst the locals.

Shopping
Hoedspruit is the centre of wildlife tourism in South Africa. As such, it has an incredible selection of quality shops for such a small town. Here is a list of some of our favourites.
Now operating under the banner of the Ultra Liquors group, this is the best wine shop in town. If you want to find unique and interesting South African wines, this is the place to shop. They also have a great selection of local artisan gins and offer gin tastings as well. This is one of our first stops whenever we come to town. It is now located just past Pick n' Pay (just continue through the parking lot, it will be on your right).

Le Bamba is a locally-owned, family-run grocery store that is the original grocery store in Hoedspruit. It is particularly good for produce, sourcing some from local farmers. Next door is Fat Franks Butcher shop, which is the best place in town to buy meat. They also have the best selection of spices in town.

Entertainment & Activities
Hoedspruit prides itself on being the heart of the South African wildlife scene. There are numerous places to see and learn about the area's wildlife, from local experts.
There are also many other things to do, including hot air ballooning, scenic flights and guided hikes. Contact Les or Annette if there are activities you are interested in that are not listed here.

Moholoholo got its start protecting the areas raptors. They house an incredible assortment of eagles, hawks and vultures- all of whom are unable to be released due to previous injuries.

Pilgrim's Rest is an old mining town located just off the Panorama Route. It came into being during the mid-1800's when many came to the area in search of gold. The town maintains many historical buildings, most which have now been converted to hotels, restaurants and tourist shops. It is a great addition to a tour of the Panorama Route.

A boat cruise on the nearby Blyde Dam is a terrific way to get close to the area's amazing nature. The cruise takes you around the dam, where you may see hippos, amazing bird life and waterfalls (depending on the season).

Then take the lift down to the bottom of the gorge where you can walk along boardwalks through the forest, learning about the animals and plants along the way. There are restaurants and a gift shop to enjoy at the end of your adventures. Well worth the visit!

If you are ordering tea in a restaurant, you will often be asked "Five Roses or Rooibos"? Five Roses is a popular local brand of traditional black tea blend, similar to orange pekoe. Rooibos is made from the indigenous 'red bush' plant. It has no caffeine, low tannins and is delicious!

The monthly farmer's market is a great place for local items
If you happen to be in Hoedspruit on the first Saturday of the month, be sure to visit the farmer's market. The market takes place in the Zandspruit commercial area, next to Hogfathers restaurant- a short drive or 20-minute walk from Nkanyi House. It's always busy and is a great place to meet the community and shop for locally-produces foods and crafts.

Are you a runner? Take part in the Hoedspruit Park Run!
If you are a runner, or avid walker, you can take part in the weekly 5km Hoedspruit Park Run. The run/walk takes place on the Protrack training grounds, just a few kilometers north of town on the R40 and next to the Thirsty Giraffe restaurant. The start time is 7:00am (October-March) and 8:00am April-September.
This is a family-friendly, very welcoming event, which focuses on fun. Many people walk the course. Everyone is welcome, but note that the track has some hills and traverses through woods, where thorns, holes and other obstacles may be present.
