Just across the road we are so lucky to have this hotel with great pub food; generous helpings and inexpensive. Our favourites are the subterranean pie (rabbit!) and the steaks. They also have a bottle shop!

MACq01 is a must! It's down on the wharf, very new but designed like an old warehouse and it's won lots of awards as a hotel and restaurant. But you can just go down there and have a coffee, wine or a Tassie G&T and sit in their gorgeous lounge and look at the view. Very special.

Mure's is the original fish restaurant in Hobart and has the most amazing location right on the wharf. They catch the fish themselves. Sit on the wharf right next to the fishing boats. Also great for icecream in summer.

No point in going to Daci and Daci just for a coffee...you HAVE to have a cake, pastry or both - this is a sensational french style brasserie. Not to be missed if you're down at Salamanca.

Port Arthur is a village and historic site in southern Tasmania. Sitting on the Tasman Peninsula, it was a 19th-century penal settlement and is now an open-air museum. Ruins include the huge penitentiary and the remaining shell of the Convict Church, which was built by inmates. It is the best preserved convict site in Australia, and among the most significant convict era sites worldwide. Amongst it's many awards it has received Australian Traveller People's Choice Award - Finalist Best Guided Tour 2017.

Richmond is one of Tasmania's most popular destinations, steeped in history, family-friendly and a hub for food and wine lovers. Nestled in the heart of the Coal River Valley, Richmond was established as an important military staging post and convict station linking Hobart with Port Arthur. The village is famous for its elegant Georgian architecture, with beautiful heritage buildings dating back as early as the 1820's now housing galleries, tea shops, craft boutiques and museums. Most of the vineyards are sited on north east slopes in the valley to get most benefit from the sun. Pinot noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon blanc are the classic varieties here.

The Huon Valley is a highlight when it comes to touring Tasmania. The valley and its surrounds are a truly mesmerising part of our island and are home to many passionate producers of apples, cherries, hops, salmon, cider, wine, cheeses, chocolate - yum! Plus it has stunning scenic drives alongside the Huon River. It is a beguiling French influence due to the original french explorers who came here. You can get to the South West Wilderness; you can bathe in the hot springs at Hastings Caves; you can experience the Tahune Airwalk and you can buy fresh veggies and fruit at roadside stalls. Plus there are places like Willie Smith's cidery, and Home Hill winery for food, drink and merriment

Hard to define MONA - so here's what they say: 'Mona: a museum, or something. In Tasmania, or somewhere. Catch the ferry. Drink beer. Eat cheese. Talk crap about art. You'll love it.'' It's essential to do it at least once and give yourself plenty of time. You'll love it, you'll hate it. It will bemuse you.

The museum was established in 1846, by the Royal Society of Tasmania, the oldest Royal Society outside England. It is fondly known as TMAG and has art, exhibitions, and importantly showcases the aboriginal and european history of Tasmania. Don't miss the Bond Store.

Parks & Nature

The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, which cover an area of approximately 14 hectares is Australia's second-oldest established in 1818. These gardens are home to the largest collection of mature conifers in the Southern Hemisphere and it also has the only subantarctic plant house in the world. Very pretty to wonder through, sit and have a picnic or have lunch at the restaurant. It adjoins Government House which was built in 1855 and is of Gothic Revival style.

A natural reserve situated right on the doorstep of Hobart which you can see from our courtyard. It takes 30 minutes to drive to the pinnacle of Mount Wellington (Kunanyi) from where you can get close to the weather. Some days you can see far and wide, across the Tasman Sea and into the wild South West National Park, World Heritage Area. On other days, you cannot see your shoes! In winter wear warm clothes, beanies, gloves, scarves, puffer jackets. You have been warned!
