If you travel following the route of the St. Marks River northward from the coast, you will eventually arrive at an intriguing spot where the river appears to vanish. Here the river drops into a sinkhole and flows underground a few hundred feet before it reemerges on the other side of a natural bridge of land that runs between. This natural bridge is the site of the second largest Civil War battle where Confederate soldiers, mostly teenage boys and old men from Tallahassee met and held Union forces at bay. A reenactment of this famous battle is held the first full weekend every March at The Natural Bridge Battlefield Historic State Park. Free and open to the public.

Walk through nearly 500 years of recorded history on your visit to San Marcos de Apalache Historic State Park located strategically at the confluence of the St. Marks and Wakulla Rivers. Native tribes roamed the area long before Spanish explorer Panfilo de Narvaez first arrived in 1528. Self-guided walking tour interprets ruins left by the Spanish, English, American and Confederate forces that once occupied this site. Small museum displays recovered artifacts. Short entertaining video explains the history. Nature trail. Picnicking. Fishing. Feel the ‘magic’ at Tucker’s Point.

Larger tanks feature sharks, sea turtles, stingrays and saltwater fish. Outside are rescue tanks with rehabilitating marine life and a large assembly of hermit crabs. Unlike most large public aquariums that emphasize porpoises and big fishes, this facility showcases the weird and wonderful living treasures of the wild North Florida coast.
