Ordered the eponymous dishes - bun cha (bbq’d Pork and pork patty, in a pork broth with noodles and fragrant greens) and nem cua be (crab meat and vermicelli noodle deep-fried spring rolls). You get them together for 90,000VND, with a large bowl of the broth and meat, a literal platter of greens including mint, lettuce, and coriander, and two of the rolls. Do not miss out - this was by far the best food in Hanoi

The traditional style from restaurant design to the cuisine. Delicious dishes are located in the courtyard of the ancient villa French romantic. It is a re-imagining of the tiled roofs of Hanoi's Old Quarter, where you will see the image of a street gift shop with stalls, or a picture of a salesperson. in the traditional dress. Many dishes, enthusiastic staff. It's great. A wide variety of Vietnamese can be found at this restaurants. If you are unsure of what to order, it will be good to go around and have a look at the cooking stalls for options. banh mi is ubiquitous in Vietnam. It’s one of Vietnamese cuisine’s most iconic dishes so everyone has their personal favorite. It’s the one dish we had everywhere we went in Vietnam, from Hanoi to Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh City. We tried to look for the best in every city and our research in Hanoi took us to this place – Bánh Mì Lãn Ông.Strictly speaking, banh mi is the Vietnamese word for bread, or more specifically the personal-sized French baguette. But when most tourists say “banh mi”, they’re referring to this sandwich made with different types of meat, vegetables, and condiments

They put us upstairs where we had a great view of the meals being cooked - they were fresh, steamy, hot and so incredibly tasty and washed down with a chilled beer. Super duper cheap, great staff and a fabulous atmosphere. The kids loved looking down on the meals being cooked and the adults appreciated a bit of quiet time. This is an absolute must for any Hanoi traveller. Put it as number one on your budget food stop

Bún Riêu is a traditional Vietnamese rice vermicelli soup. There are different types of bún riêu, but what we had here today was bún riêu cua, a popular version made with crab, tomatoes, pork, and tofu. Bún riêu cua is served with tomato broth and topped with freshwater crab, specifically rice paddy crabs, which are pounded with the shell into a fine paste before being strained. The crab liquid is then used as a base for the soup along with tomatoes, giving it a wonderful tangy flavor. I love crab and tomato-based dishes so this was one of my favorite noodle soups in Vietnam.

n front of the shop you can watch them make the bánh cuốn. Bánh cuốn is made from a thin sheet of steamed fermented rice batter filled with seasoned ground pork and wood ear mushrooms. Based on my research, bánh cuốn rice sheets are traditionally made by steaming rice batter on a cloth stretched over a pot of boiling water, but that didn’t seem to be the case here. One woman would ladle a scoop of the batter onto this convex metal surface. It would quickly solidify into a thin delicate sheet that the other woman would then fill with ingredients and roll up before cutting with scissors into bite-sized pieces. You can tell they’ve been doing this for a long time by how quickly they were worki

Quán Gốc Đa is known for many varieties of deep-fried street food like nem cua be, bánh gối, and bánh tôm. Bánh gối is like a Vietnamese empanada filled with minced pork, mushrooms, glass noodles, and a quail egg. The filling is placed in the center of the pastry skin which is then folded and pinched closed in a half circle before being deep fried to a golden crisp. Bánh gối means “pillow cake” and it gets its name from its shape, which is said to resemble a pillow. Next to the bánh gối is another Hanoi specialty called bánh tôm, which is a sweet potato shrimp fritter

Most foreign tourists are familiar with bánh mì sandwiches made with pate, cold cuts, and vegetables. But this place specializes in bánh mì thịt xiên nướng, which is a type of banh mi made with grilled pork skewers. They don’t put as much in the sandwich, just two sticks of skewered pork (we got double), cucumber slices, chili sauce, and some Vietnamese coriander if I remember correctly. Based on my research, thịt xiên nướng refers to grilled pork, but the meat in this one looked more like nem nướng which are grilled pork meatballs or sausages. In any case, it was good – savory, spicy, and a little sweet. From what I understand, the pork is marinated in a mixture with sugar, fish sauce,

If you can wake up early in the morning, at about 5 a.m., you will see lines and lines of oldies and teenagers doing anything from yoga to tai-chi to aerobics. It looks as if the whole city was up and running for morning exercise. In the afternoon to the South end you can see a matrix of motorbikes twisting along the lake. Blending in is a gang of “cyclo” – the famous three-wheeled carriers that take tourists with cameras handy around. To the North end where the old quarters lies, an influx of colourful clothes and shoes will dazzle you, together with the smell of trees and coffees.

A lovely tranquil temple which was a wekcome relief after the emotion of visting Hoa Lo Prison nearby. It's free to enter and well worth a visit. The decoration is incredible and almost sensory overload but it is offset by the calmness of the place.

St. Joseph's Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral built in 1882 and completed in 1886 in the Neo-Gothic style. Now more than 120 years old, the cathedral remains one of the most impressive remnants of French occupation in the country. The cathedral was constructed after the French Army defeated the Vietnamese forces at Hanoi. The cathedral itself and much of the surrounding Nha Chung area were constructed on the grounds of what was formerly the Bao Thien pagoda, which had been built during the Ly dynasty.

If you are into 60s & 70s history this is a great place to have coffee, they have worked really hard to get the decor right from the era of the Vietnam or (as the Vietnamese call it) American war. Part of the Cong coffee shop chain which are springing up all over Hanoi. Great coffee, very popular place, prices a bit higher that some other options but the decor and generally good service make up for it Looks like a good place to meet up with trendy locals! Also close to some main attractions such as the army museum. Highly recommended: Coconut Coffee

1900 Le Theatre opened in 2016 and has brought the feel of a large international club - with Hanoian characteristics - to an area of mostly small drinkeries and plastic stools. It’s off to a flying start and comes with a friendly vibe and DJs serving up contemporary pop dance tunes. During our most recent visit, it was open till 1AM - later than other bars in the area. The old theatre was a venue for traditional Vietnamese performance in the early twentieth century, at the height of French colonialism

Mad Botanist has the best vista of any cocktail bar we know in Hanoi - looking across St Joseph's Cathedral. It has a pretty good name too. These guys are gin specialists - there are over one hundred options and some interesting mixer ideas too. Afficionados might uncover a lack of consistency between pours of the same drop as we did. But we’re easily pleased and enjoyed a couple of nights of gin-fuelled conversation here. The name "Mad Botanist” sets a high bar for speakeasy cool that these guys are hopefully headed to. The large TV is an odd inclusion. To find Mad Botanist, head through the cafe entrance and up the stairs. It's in the heart of the Old Quarter.

The guys from Pasteur St Brewing Company were the first to make a serious mark on Vietnam’s craft beer scene back in 2015. Introducing American-style craft beer, brewed in Vietnam, with Vietnamese influences, their tiny tap room became the talk of the town. Pasteur St's come a long way and in 2017, opened in impressive digs in Vietnam's capital, right by St Joseph's Cathedral in the heart of the city. Apart from a vast range of craft beers, from IPAs to exotic locally inspired flavours, Pasteur also serves American-style food

A small, almost English style, pub in the Old Quarter of Hanoi. A normal pub, but with a amazing collection of whiskey... Live music in the evening and friendly staff. The bar has a list of original cocktails named after facets of Thailand/Hanoi, which must have served as inspiration for each drink. Just make sure to read the mix of ingredients
