To this day, the Byzantine Forum remains the center of the modern city of Durrës, as it once was the Roman Byzantine center of the ancient city of Dyrrhachium or Dyrrah. It seems that things change only very slightly! This forum is recognized as one of the most beautiful monuments of the late Roman and the early Byzantine eras in Albania. Thanks to the concentric structures of this wide complex, the Forum bears a distinct resemblance to the Curved Forum of Constantine, which unfortunately, ceased to exist in 1204.

At the heart of Durres is the modest but evocative collection of colonnades that made up Macellum’s forum after the Roman era. It dates between the 600s and the 800s and is paved with excavated marble stones. You can get up close to the Corinthian columns in the forum to see the exquisite detail of the stonework. At one time there would have been a statue at the centre of the plaza for whichever Byzantine emperor was in power at the time. Close to the forum are Durres’ Roman thermal baths, which were discovered along with the amphitheatre in the 1960s. What remains is a hypocaust and a pool five metres by seven.

Hidden treasure... The Byzantine Forum (Macellum) may not be the best preserved of Durrës' Roman remains, but it is still worth its time for its importance in the development of the city from antiquity to late antiquity. While only a few pillars remain, its somewhat dilapidated condition hides the fact that this open-air market has been the beating heart of the city of Dyrrachium (ancient name of Durrës) for many centuries.

The architecture of our next destination, the Byzantine Forum or market square, located near the Amphitheater, reflects the typical function of an open, circular marketplace. In the market’s center, there is a podium and a well that are erected on a marble slab which covers the floor up to the colonnade. The model of the entire building and the archaeological finds date back to the period of Emperors Anastasius and Justinian at the beginning of the 4th century A.D.

A small and uncared site, but a perfect example of Roman architecture. Near the centre, so easy to go to.
