Two churches stand at the place where the Virgin of Guadalupe is said to have appeared to the Indian Juan Diego a few years after the conquest: the old basilica, which dates from the 18th century, and the new one from the end of the 20th century. The latter is in the shape of a tent, and houses the most venerated Catholic image in Latin America.

A very special place. This used to be the hill where the pre-hispanic Mexicans venerated God Mother Tonantzin. With the arrival of the Spaniards they changed her name, after the account of several appearances, to the Virgin of Guadalupe. The Basilica is in fact a group of several chapels, and its well worth a visit, as Mexicans travel from all over the country to see her. On December 12th the plaza fills up with thousands of pilgrims.
