You can rent a car in midtown and return it to the airport with no one-way charge usually. This long established European firm is consistently cheaper than anywhere else, the easiest to get in and out, and the cars (mostly very nice European models with convertibles very popular) are always actually full of gas. Only issues I've ever had are that if you're returning first thing in the morning the attendant isn't always there precisely on time, so I wouldn't try to return it then if I were in a particular hurry. Always, always check your bill for correct mileage charges.
