This area served as the thriving center of black enterprise in Atlanta from the 1890's through the 1940's. It is the birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and the site of black-owned businesses such as the Atlanta Life Insurance Co. and Studioplex, the headquarters for the National Black Arts Festival.
