“Ripley Castle is well worth a visit. A guided tour reveals the history of the area, the secret priest hole, rise and fall of dynasties. There is a natural park with deer, a lake, walks. There are walks around lanes and through woods. there is a nursery of plants and trees including tropical greenhouses if you are interested in plants and gardening. Popular wedding venue. Excellent cafe and pub in Ripley. Check their website for details. Classic Castle Tour Guided tours start at the Front door of the Castle and take approximately 1 hour. You can enjoy six of the Castle rooms which include the Library, Drawing rooms, Tower room and Knights Chamber. An entertaining and engaging tour tailored to an adult audience, though inclusive to all and families with children (ideally over 5 years) are welcome to join these tours. Children’s Tours Running at 1.00pm, daily during the 2019 Easter & Summer Holidays. 13th to 26th April 20th July to 31st August Children will be introduced to 700 years of Ingilby family history which includes a wild boar hunt with nearly killed King Edward III, the Gunpowder plot and Oliver Cromwell being kept at gunpoint in the Library, eccentric ancestors and even ghost stories! The tour takes 45 minutes and is perfect for children aged 5-13 years. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The Walled Gardens are a pleasure to visit at any time of year and in April contain a collection of Hyacinth giving a riot of colour in Spring as well as a magnificent aroma. The huge range of hot houses contain a highly impressive collection of tropical plants, ferns and cacti. Ancient wisteria and clematis thrive on the high south-facing walls. The Walled kitchen garden contains an extensive herb bed and an extraordinary collection of rare vegetables, grown in cooperation with the Henry Doubleday Research Association. The pleasure grounds contain a collection of specimen trees from around the world and thousands of spring flowering bulbs, daffodils, narcissi, snowdrops, aconites and bluebells. There is also a small children’s play area. No visit to Ripley Castle would be complete without a stroll into our deer park. Some of the oak trees are one thousand years old, and they still look magnificent with their impressive girth and gnarled branches. You will see plenty of wildlife on your way round the deer park: fallow deer, rabbits, squirrels, heron, canada and greylag geese, mallard, teal and wigeon, pheasants, woodpeckers and, if you are very lucky, a kingfisher as it flashes past. The park walk takes you round the castle’s large ornamental lake, across the waterfall and into the deer park itself.”
